Eight
ways to reduce your digital carbon footprint
While
the internet’s data is essentially invisible, it is processed and stored in
massive data centers all over the world. Those data centers are powered 24/7,
just waiting to send information — videos, podcasts, music, news, memes,
messages and everything the internet offers — to our digital devices. All that
data that we’ve grown accustomed to having fast at our fingertips along with
our always-on mentality ends up contributing to our digital carbon footprints. Measuring
our individual impact isn’t easy, but you can take steps to reduce it. Here are
eight things you can do:
10 products we use in everyday life that wouldn't exist
without NASA
If
you weren't obsessed enough already with the work that NASA does to advance our
knowledge of space, here's another reason: its research has a large number of
applications beyond space suits and shuttles.
Though
the science it engages with can seem nebulously complicated, it's really all
around us in the products we use every day. Technology originally developed to
support the nation's astronauts is often later adapted for consumer use. If you
take a closer look around your house and closet on Earth, it doesn't take long
to come across something that was also employed by astronauts floating in space
hundreds of thousands of miles away.
Knowing
the historical origins of these everyday products certainly helps us appreciate
innovations that we previously took for granted. You have NASA research to
thank for these 10 popular products:
How
Recommender Systems Work
Recommender systems are machine learning systems that help users discover new product and services. Every time you shop online, a recommendation system is guiding you towards the most likely product you might purchase.
Recommender
systems are an essential feature in our digital world, as users are often
overwhelmed by choice and need help finding what they're looking for. This
leads to happier customers and, of course, more sales. Recommender systems are
like salesmen who know, based on your history and preferences, what you like.
Company
Core Values: 70 Examples From Top Employers
From
making hiring decisions to determining how to handle a difficult customer,
company core values can guide the decision making process in a variety of
situations, but only if they’re codified and adhered to.
To
help get you started in creating your own company core values based on your
unique company culture, we’ve taken 10 value-sets from the best places to work
in each of the markets we serve. Rather than define parameters or tell you how
to create values specific to your company, here is a list from 70 of the best
places to work in America to get your creative juices flowing.
AI in the enterprise: 8 myths, debunked
Enough with romantic robots: Let's dispel eight
common misconceptions about applying AI in the business world now
2045:
Death will be optional
If
the sensational but well-researched book la Muerte De la Muerte, authored by
two genetic engineers is to be believed, within 27 years, death would be an
option and ageing reversible.
Humans
by then will only die in accidents and never of natural causes or illness and
that old age should be classified as an ‘illness’ so that a public-funded
research can be done to find the cure with Wood saying that he doesn’t consider
death an illness.
Amazon’s
Home Security Company Is Turning Everyone Into Cops
Neighbors,
a social media crime-reporting app owned by Amazon, creates a digital ecosystem
in which you are encouraged to assume the worst about your neighbors—and people
of color are once again being harmed.

9
steps how to become a UX / UI designer, if you do not have a work experience
and a degree
I
worked with such companies as Montblanc, Dunhill, Saks Fifth Avenue and many
others as a graphic designer. I have about 10 years of experience in the design
field. After 7 years of work as a graphic designer, I decided to switch to web
design; I’m just talking about the web, because at that time there were no such
divisions as UX, UI and others. (The reason for this change was the interest in
a new design direction, greater freedom of ideas expression and no matter how
typical it sounds the greater demand on the market and greater long term opportunities).
I
just want to let you know right away that just like many of you now, who are
reading this article, I had no experience in web and mobile design. The only
advantage I had was that I more or less knew the photoshop. I did not have the
appropriate portfolio and experience. But after some preparation time, I still
found the first job, then another, then the next one, until I got noticed by
Wargaming and was invited to take a position of Senior Visual Designer.
What
Are Stablecoins?
There's
a "stablecoin invasion" happening. Will this price-stabilized virtual
currency be the next big thing to disrupt the crypto space?
Stablecoins
— cryptocurrencies that are increasingly gaining traction — are much more fixed
than normal cryptocurrencies. This is because their values are pegged to other
assets such as the US dollar or gold.
Smart
Cities 2025
Smart
cities and smarter projects have been among the most actively discussed
realizations made possible by IoT, data, connectivity and by leveraging a mix
of varied technologies. The interest in smart cities continues to grow, driven
by a range of socioeconomic and technological developments across the globe.
A
smart city responds to the challenges of our time and quality of life. It also
ensures that the city meets the needs of future generations — In terms of
economic, social and environmental issues. In short, it is a good place to live
with the best possible quality of life and most efficient use of resources.
Worldwide smart cities market will grow from its current $622 Billion to $1
Trillion in 2019 and $3.48 Trillion by 2026, registering a CAGR of 21.28%.
17 Great Books for Anyone Who Wants to Get Ahead in Life
Why read? It's a practice widely held by high
achievers who get ahead by learning from the wisdom of others.
The quest for continual self-improvement is
certainly high on the list of the many things which set successful people apart
from everybody else. That's why high achievers tend to be readers who get ahead
by learning from the wisdom of others. If that's you, here are several titles
to consider, according to top executives.
Women Driving Innovation and Growth for the Good of All
Women are working and leading the best companies. As
tech continues to evolve, women are more focused than ever to demonstrate their
strength, passion, and dedication to help innovate and lead technology in the
age of digitization and automation across the globe. Today’s progress comes as
a result of decades of hard work, although there is still quite of bit of work
yet to be done.
However, research also reveals as automation
continues to become even more pervasive it will cause some women to leave the
workforce or force them to change the way they work. Despite the many changes
that will occur in the marketplace, the women on this list have shown they are
determined to stay a steady course. Many, in fact, have already altered their
skillsets changing the roles they have within their organizations.
Today, women account for more than half of all
workers within several industries such as financial, education and health
services, leisure and hospitality, and other services. However, they are still
underrepresented in many industries.
This year, the seventh annual awards program of
Connected World magazine recognized women as trailblazers and innovators in the
IoT space. In addition, the women were celebrated at an event in June for their
achievements of spreading the message of the Internet of Things. Help us
continue to honor each of these women by reading on and learning more about
this year’s Women of M2M and IoT.
Though the story is US centric, it is motivational
to read and emulate.
Your internet data is rotting
Many MySpace users were dismayed to discover earlier
this year that the social media platform lost 50 million files uploaded between
2003 and 2015. The failure of MySpace to care for and preserve its users’
content should serve as a reminder that relying on free third-party services
can be risky. MySpace has probably preserved the users’ data; it just lost
their content. The data was valuable to MySpace; the users’ content less so.
Free storage is a great offer, but sometimes you
only get what you pay for. The internet is neither secure nor permanent. It
never promised to be, and users should not assume that it will become so. Parts
are rotting and corroding and collapsing as I type this. Just hope and plan to
not be resting on that platform when it falls.

International Conference on Urban
Data Science. 20-21 Jan 2020 at IIT Madras
Urban
areas continue to be the centers of human activities and remain the loci of
resource and service consumption, economic transactions, and innovation. In
fact, the projections in parts of the world point to rapid urban growth. Other
areas of the urbanized world are experiencing population decline, reduced
revenues, concentrated poverty, and higher demands for services. Whether
growing or shrinking, cities and metropolitan areas face challenges of
infrastructure, public health, transportation, public safety, and environmental
sustainability, to name but a few. To address some of these challenges, the
cities of today are increasingly leveraging advanced computing and
communication technologies as well as big data analytics under the umbrella of
smart cities and urban informatics. Extensive research is taking place in a
wide range of relevant research areas to address some of these emerging
challenges. Smart City initiative is of global importance especially undertaken
by cities in US, India, multiple EU countries, and UAE governments in recent
times.
We
are pleased to announce the first international conference focused on urban data
science and smart cities. The conference aims to gather researchers,
practitioners, and subject matter experts from academia, industry, and city
administration to address a number of research themes arising out of building
future smart cities.
The
conference is naturally expected to be multi-disciplinary, drawing experts in
data science, social sciences, cloud and distributed computing, urban
sustainability, public policy, and software engineering. Participants are
expected to share new findings, discuss current and future urban challenges,
exchange ideas, discuss potential collaborative opportunities, and report
latest research efforts.
