8 Mental Habits the Most Successful People Learn to Break

It's not what you learn, but what you unlearn that matters.

Sometimes, success comes not from what you learn to do but what you learn to stop doing.

That bit of wisdom comes from Sandja Brügmann, serial entrepreneur and founder of the Passion Institute, a recently launched online educational program and consultancy for executives and entrepreneurs. "Once we have developed understanding of how we interfere with our visions and goals, then comes the challenging process of unlearning and changing specific behaviors," she explains.

Unlearning is hard work. "It requires one to move out of automatic behaviors and into conscious understanding, where we take control of our own actions and lives," Brügmann says. "It requires confronting uncomfortable feelings and an attentive vision for a different business life." In fact, she says, it takes many of the same skills that entrepreneurs need to succeed in their businesses. "It's a real act of self-love at a deep level," she says. It's also what you need to do to become a transformational leader.

What are some of the behaviors we all need to unlearn to become effective leaders? Here are the ones Brügmann says she encounters most often.

1. Pleasing
2. Being fuzzy about boundaries
3. Not speaking your mind
4. Avoiding failure
5. Letting fear hold you back
6. Negative thinking
7. Getting really, really busy
8. Looking for your power outside yourself

6 wisdom picks from around the World

The highly interconnected world of our times provides valuable opportunities to absorb the best from every part of the world. However, this can happen only when one has an open mind.

The process of opening up our mind to the vastness and diversity of the world is what I call spirituality. The openness to see and understand that the whole world belongs to us, and have a sense of ownership of that which is good and the willingness to take responsibility for correcting what’s not right. Such an outlook makes one a global citizen, who can adopt and imbibe the best from every corner of the world and blossom into a complete personality.

We should learn team work from Japan, value of time from Germany, etiquette from Britain, marketing from America and humanity from India.

Teamwork from Japanese
Precision and punctuality from Germans
Negotiation & marketing from Americans
Etiquette from British
Happiness from Bhutan
Human Values from Indians

Here are my top 18 takeaways on startup wisdom from the LitFest, especially from the two panels titled ‘Changing Faces of Entrepreneurship: 1980 and 2015’ and ‘New Retail v/s Old Retail.’ The speakers included Snapdeal Co-Founder Kunal Bahl, Infosys Co-Founder N.R. Narayana Murthy, Portea Medical CEO Meena Ganesh, Zivame CEO Richa Kar, Reliance Retail CEO Damodar Mall (author of ‘Supermarketwalla’) and Vivek Kaul (author of ‘Easy Money’).

27 Bits of Wisdom from 2012 Commencement Addresses

At Goucher College last month (May 2012), Ira Glass said that commencement speakers “give stock advice, which is then promptly ignored.” He may be right. Every year, speakers spew the same old sayings: Never give up! Embrace failure! Be passionate! Here’s a look at speakers who said things a little differently this year.
