Moving ahead on yet another pet project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch the 'Digital India' campaign, aimed at creating a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.
The programme comprises of various initiatives, each targeted to prepare India for becoming a knowledge economy and for bringing good governance to citizens through synchronized and co-ordinated engagement of the entire government.
PM Modi will launch the Digital India Week on Wednesday evening urging people to gain knowledge and to empower themselves through the Digital India Programme.
The vision of Digital India programme also aims at inclusive growth in areas of electronic services, products, manufacturing and job opportunities etc. The vision of Digital India is centred on three key areas -
(i) Digital Infrastructure as a utility to every citizen
(ii) Governance & services on demand
(iii) Digital Empowerment of citizens
The Digital India programme aims to provide broadband highways, universal access to mobile connectivity, public internet access programme, e-governance: Reforming government through technology, eKranti - Electronic delivery of services, Information for all, Electronics manufacturing: Target net zero imports, IT for jobs and early harvest programmes.
In line with these objectives, the government has launched some inititaives. Others are being readied for launch. We take a look at some of them:

Digital India: 15 key initiatives
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi launching the "Digital India Week" here on Wednesday, 1st Jul 2015 following are the projects and products that have been launched, or are ready for deployment, as part of the initiative:
- Digital locker system to minimize usage of physical documents and enable their e-sharing via registered repositories.
- MyGov.in as an an online platform to engage citizens in governance through a "Discuss, Do and Disseminate" approach.
- Swachh Bharat Mission Mobile app to achieve the goals set by this mission.
- e-Sign framework to allow citizens to digitally sign documents online using Aadhaar.
- e-Hospital system for important healthcare services such as online registration, fee payment, fixing doctors' appointments, online diagnostics and checking blood availability online.
- National Scholarship Portal for beneficiaries from submission of application to verification, sanction and disbursal.
- Digitize India Platform for large-scale digitization of records in the country to facilitate efficient delivery of services to the citizens.
- Bharat Net programe as a high-speed digital highway to connect all 250,000 gram panchayats of country -- the world's largest rural broadband project using optical fibre.
- BSNL's Next Generation Network to replace 30-year old telephone exchanges to manage all types of services like voice, data, multimedia and other types of communication services.
- BSNL's large scale deployment of Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the country.
- "Broadband Highways' as one of the pillars of Digital India to address the connectivity issue while enabling and providing technologies to facilitate delivery of services to citizens.
- Outsourcing Policy to create such centres in different northeastern states and in smaller towns across the country.
- Electronics Development Fund to promote innovation, research and product development to create a resource pool within the country as also a self-sustaining eco-system of venture funds.
- National Centre for Flexible Electronics to promote research and innovation in the emerging area of flexible electronics.
- Centre of Excellence on Internet on Things (IoT) as a joint initiative of the government agencies and private institutions such as Nasscom.

eBasta -- A Digital Library Of Downloadable School Books
In line with the government's Digital India initiative, this project has created a framework to make school books accessible in digital form as e-books to be read and used on tablets and laptops. The main idea is to bring various publishers (free as well as commercial) and schools together on one platform. In addition to the portal, a back-end framework to facilitate the organization and easy management of such resources has also been made, along with the web based applications that can be installed on tablets for navigating the framework.
The framework, implemented as a portal, brings together three categories of stakeholders: the publisher, the school and the student. It provides them with the following primary functionalities:
Students: Easy access to interactive and dynamic content augmented with text, charts, graphics, videos and auxiliary resource. eBastas are delivered through the internet no packaging no shipping and hence NO WAIT. eBasta’s are portable. Carry eBasta’s in any storage medium without worrying about their weight and start reading them ANY WHERE ANY TIME.
School/Teachers: The eBooks and other contents in the eBasta can be logically organised by the school / Teacher while creating the eBasta. Teachers can choose and bundle content according to their teaching methods. Access to variety of resources – text, simulation, animations, audio books, videos, etc – to choose from. Review, Comment, Rate on eContents. Help schools with lesser teaching resources to gain from the resources of better schools. Provide teachers who contribute content / generate more relevant collections nation-wide visibility.
Publishers:
Single point interface for reaching out to multiples of schools, across the country
Convenience to register, sell and distribute ebooks & related interactive econtents online
Overcome the logistical problems of book printing, transport and delivery, especially at remote locations
Significantly shortens the cycle of content editing /changes and facilitates faster release of updates
Support for DRM from the pioneers in the Industry wherever required
Get direct feedback from teachers and students regarding eContents

ICT News: Companies,: Tie-ups, Joint Ventures, New Initiatives -- Aug 2011
• Mahindra Satyam, Microsoft join hands for child support systems.
• Cognizant Technology Solutions has overtaken Wipro's IT Services arm for the first time in the June quarter to become India's No 3 software exporter. While TCS is No 1, Infosys is in the 2nd place.
• Polaris Software Lab expects to generate revenue of around $100 m in the next five years from its FT Grid (financial technology grid) offering, which the company launched recently, claiming it to be the world's largest ‘cloud' offering with capacity to handle 100 million customers.
• TCS has joined hands with the Singapore Management University (SMU) to start a research facility for developing IT frameworks for the so-called intelligent city (iCity) model of urban development.
• Aircel and Huawei have jointly conducted world’s first trials that will enable subscribers to use the same device across three different networks - GSM, 3G and Long Term Evolution- Time Division Duplex (LTE-TDD).
• MTNL has tied up with Akmin Technologies Pvt Ltd to launch ‘Mobile Web Site Builder Service' to build and own websites at just Rs 75 a month.
• Shareholders of Mahindra Satyam have opposed the management's proposal to merge the company with Tech Mahindra.
• Infosys launches InfyRadio -- radio station for staff.
• Religare Technologies has teamed up with Airtel using Fortis Healthcare as its knowledge partner to offer 24x7 medical assistance on phone to mobile users. Teleconsultations will be at Rs. 35/=
• SAP India announced its first project to e-enable a Gram Panchayat in Rajasthan's Soda village.
