In India, toddlers are starting to write computer codes before they can talk

In today’s digital age, most children learn to swipe and click before they can speak coherently or walk. Smartphones and tablets are their digital pacifiers, companions and entertainers. It is but natural, then, that many parents want their children to learn how to create the very technologies that they are dependent on.

Finding your first job in cyber security: A guide for computer science and technology graduates

Just finishing a degree in computer science? Interested in switching jobs? You may want to strongly consider a career in cyber security. Although most technology graduates are sought after these days, cyber security professionals are particularly in high demand. Both the UK and US governments are hiring cyber security professionals. The private sector in both countries and in many countries around the world is hiring professionals with the requisite knowledge and skills to help fend off growing cyber security threats.

What is Sextortion (with examples) and how can you avoid it?

In general terms, sextortion is extortion involving material of a sexual nature, but it can take various forms. This crime is a growing concern in many parts of the globe and affects a broad range of targets, including males, females, minors, and adults. Aside from the psychological and sometimes physical damage it imparts, a major problem with this crime is that many cases go unreported because victims are too embarrassed.

With the popularity of social media, messaging apps, and online dating, the exchange of explicit material online is far more commonplace. Plus, webcams make it very simple for people to record themselves (or be secretly recorded). With the prevalence of sextortion crimes, it’s important that everyone is aware of what to look out for.

In this post, we explain what sextortion is, and how it takes place, including describing some real-life examples. We’ll then provide tips to help you avoid becoming the next victim of sextortion.

Here are 15 methods you can use to help speed up your internet connection.

ISRO Chandrayaan 2 Launch Today: Answers To All Your Questions On India's Second Moon Mission

India’s second unmanned mission to the Moon, named Chandrayaan 2, is all set to take off on 22 July, provided the weather conditions are ideal. After the success of Chandrayaan-1 and the host of other satellite launches since, the expectations from Chandrayaan 2 are quite high.  With Chandrayaan 2, in a first for India, ISRO will be depositing a lander and rover on the surface of the Moon. There is a lot to unpack, so let’s dive right into it. The aim is to make this your one-stop-shop for everything Chandrayaan 2.

Human Computer Interaction - brief intro

Human-computer interaction (HCI) is an area of research and practice that emerged in the early 1980s, initially as a specialty area in computer science embracing cognitive science and human factors engineering. HCI has expanded rapidly and steadily for three decades, attracting professionals from many other disciplines and incorporating diverse concepts and approaches. To a considerable extent, HCI now aggregates a collection of semi-autonomous fields of research and practice in human-centered informatics. However, the continuing synthesis of disparate conceptions and approaches to science and practice in HCI has produced a dramatic example of how different epistemologies and paradigms can be reconciled and integrated in a vibrant and productive intellectual project.

As Water Scarcity Increases, Desalination Plants Are on the Rise. Can Desalination Quench the World's Thirst?

After decades of slow progress, desalination is increasingly being used to provide drinking water around the globe. Costs for processing salt water for drinking water have dropped, but it remains an expensive option and one that creates environmental problems that must be addressed.

DeepMind and Google: the battle to control artificial intelligence

One afternoon in August 2010, in a conference hall perched on the edge of San Francisco Bay, a 34-year-old Londoner called Demis Hassabis took to the stage. Walking to the podium with the deliberate gait of a man trying to control his nerves, he pursed his lips into a brief smile and began to speak: “So today I’m going to be talking about different approaches to building…” He stalled, as though just realising that he was stating his momentous ambition out loud. And then he said it: “AGI”.

Demis Hassabis founded a company to build the world’s most powerful AI. Then Google bought him out. Hal Hodson asks who is in charge

20 Habits Of Highly Unsuccessful And Ineffective Leaders

Being a leader is not an easy task. You need to guide those that follow you to achieve a common goal. It has been said that a motivated worker is a productive worker thus a leader must also be a good role model. Here’s an infographic created by Gordon Tredgold with Visme (https://www.visme.co) that sums up the habits a leader should avoid.

The Defense Department is worried about climate change – and also a huge carbon emitter

Scientists and security analysts have warned for more than a decade that global warming is a potential national security concern. They project that the consequences of global warming – rising seas, powerful storms, famine and diminished access to fresh water – may make regions of the world politically unstable and prompt mass migration and refugee crises.

Some worry that wars may follow.

Yet with few exceptions, the U.S. military’s significant contribution to climate change has received little attention. Although the Defense Department has significantly reduced its fossil fuel consumption since the early 2000s, it remains the world’s single largest consumer of oil – and as a result, one of the world’s top greenhouse gas emitters.

From peeing in a 'roll-on cuff' to pooping into a bag: A brief history of how astronauts have gone to the bathroom in space for 57 years

Astronauts may be exceptionally brave, intelligent, and accomplished, but they're not superhuman: they still have to poop and pee when they leave Earth.

But as NASA was working to get the first humans into space in the early 60s, the agency didn't focus much on how astronauts would empty their bladders and evacuate their bowels once they were up there.

Then in 1961, astronaut Alan Shepard - the first person in space - was forced to pee his pants on the launchpad. NASA quickly realized that the lack of planning presented a rather messy problem.

The agency needed a more serious bathroom-break plan, but solutions weren't easy. After the Apollo missions ended in 1975, engineers described defecation and urination as the "bothersome aspects of space travel."

A variety of makeshift solutions have been sent into space, including pee bags, roll on "cuffs," diapers, strappy toilet seats, and $19 million commodes. Contraptions for "going" while weightless have gotten a little more comfortable, and astronauts are now generally good at keeping waste from floating around.

But retired astronaut Peggy Whitson, who logged a record-breaking 665 days in space for NASA, recently said that going to the bathroom in space was her least favorite part of working in zero gravity.

Here's the full story of how astronauts have relieved themselves in space, from 1961 to now:

How public libraries can help prepare us for the future

For generations, libraries have helped people explore knowledge, information and culture. The invention of the public library meant more and more people got to use these collections and services. In the digital age, a public library can connect even the most remote community to networks of knowledge and information. Today’s public libraries work to engage marginalised communities as users; pioneering projects like Townsville’s Murri Book Club explore ways to make the library meaningful to Indigenous people. Despite all this, there is one area in which public libraries are underused. Libraries can also help us plan for the future.

35 Innovators Under 35 for 2019

At Tech Review, it’s part of our ethos that technology can, and should be, a force for good. Our annual list of 35 innovators under 35 is a way of putting faces on that idea.

In these profiles—which feature in our new print issue— you’ll find people employing innovative methods to treat disease, to fight online harassment, and to create the next big battery breakthrough. You’ll find people using AI to better understand neurological disorders and to make cities more livable.

The list is split into five categories: Inventors, Entrepreneurs, Visionaries, Humanitarians, and Pioneers. This year’s TR35 shows that even in hard, cynical times, there are still lots of smart people willing to dedicate their lives to the idea that technology can make a safer, fairer world.
