Can Design Thinking Succeed in Your Organization?

Many leaders become discouraged when design thinking doesn’t get the results they expect. They can improve the odds of success by assessing the readiness of their organizations and preparing their teams for a different problem-solving process.

Under the right conditions, design thinking can be a powerful way to innovate and solve challenging problems, especially ones that are characterized by ambiguity and uncertainty. It offers a way for managers and employees to see their operations from the outside in — as stakeholders experience them — and make discoveries that are unlikely to occur when they are focused on productivity, efficiency, and other business-as-usual goals. But it can easily fail if people don’t understand the process or the principles behind it, and if leaders don’t provide support.

Scaling neural machine translation to 200 languages

The development of neural techniques has opened up new avenues for research in machine translation. Today, neural machine translation (NMT) systems can leverage highly multilingual capacities and even perform zero-shot translation, delivering promising results in terms of language coverage and quality. However, scaling quality NMT requires large volumes of parallel bilingual data, which are not equally available for the 7,000+ languages in the world. Focusing on improving the translation qualities of a relatively small group of high-resource languages comes at the expense of directing research attention to low-resource languages, exacerbating digital inequities in the long run. To break this pattern, here we introduce No Language Left Behind—a single massively multilingual model that leverages transfer learning across languages. We developed a conditional computational model based on the Sparsely Gated Mixture of Experts architecture, which we trained on data obtained with new mining techniques tailored for low-resource languages. Furthermore, we devised multiple architectural and training improvements to counteract overfitting while training on thousands of tasks. We evaluated the performance of our model over 40,000 translation directions using tools created specifically for this purpose—an automatic benchmark (FLORES-200), a human evaluation metric (XSTS) and a toxicity detector that covers every language in our model. Compared with the previous state-of-the-art models, our model achieves an average of 44% improvement in translation quality as measured by BLEU. By demonstrating how to scale NMT to 200 languages and making all contributions in this effort freely available for non-commercial use, our work lays important groundwork for the development of a universal translation system.

Silent layoffs grip Indian IT sector, impact over 20,000 employees

According to data shared by All India IT & ITeS Employees' Union, around 20,000 techies lost their jobs in ‘silent’ layoffs in calendar year 2023

The most common way to do a silent layoff is to give an employee 30 days to find a new role within the same company. If the employee can't, then s/he is asked to leave.

Silent layoffs have been a common practice among many firms to let go of employees, wherein they are compelled to resign in a discreet manner.

Glossary of human-centric artificial intelligence

Over the last few years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a very active research topic, moving from a purely technical field to an interdisciplinary research domain and a very active topic in terms of policy developments. The European approach for AI focuses on two main areas: excellence and trust, enabling the development and uptake of AI while ensuring people’s safety and fundamental rights. However, research and policy documentations do not always use the same vocabulary, often generating misunderstandings among researchers, policy makers, and the general public. Based on existing literature in the intersection between research, industry and policy, and given the expertise and know-now developed at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, we present here a glossary of terms on AI, with a focus on a human-centric approach, covering concepts related to trustworthy artificial intelligence such as transparency, accountability or fairness. We have collected 230 different terms from more than 10 different general sources including standards, policy documents and legal texts, as well as multiple scientific references. Each term is accompanied by one or several definitions linked to references and complemented with our own definitions when no relevant source was found. We humbly hope that the work presented here can contribute to establishing the necessary common ground for the interdisciplinary and policy-centred debate on artificial intelligence.
