The 25 greatest Java apps ever written

The story of Java began in 1991, at a time when Sun Microsystems sought to extend their lead in the computer workstation market into the burgeoning personal electronics market. Little did anyone know that the programming language Sun was about to create would democratize computing, inspire a worldwide community, and become the platform for an enduring software development ecosystem of languages, runtime platforms, SDKs, open source projects, and lots and lots of tools. After a few years of secret development led by James Gosling, Sun released the landmark “write once, run anywhere” Java platform in 1995, refocusing it beyond its original design for interactive television to applications for the burgeoning World Wide Web. By the turn of the century, Java was animating everything from smartcards to space vehicles.

Today, millions of developers program in Java. Although Java continues to evolve at an ever-faster pace, on the occasion of the platform’s 25th anniversary, Java Magazine decided to take a look back at how Java molded our planet.

What follows is a list of the 25 most ingenious and influential Java apps ever written, from Wikipedia Search to the US National Security Agency’s Ghidra. The scope of these applications runs the gamut: space exploration, video games, machine learning, genomics, automotive, cybersecurity, and more.

How Blockchain Is Enabling Digital Transformation

Blockchain is not a new technology despite much of the hype about it in recent months. What is somewhat new is what's behind the hype. It's being driven not by the technology itself, but rather its applications and the digital workplace tools it enables.

For example, we have seen the key role that blockchain technology is playing in the enablement of Web3. But it is also playing a major role in the development of the metaverse and defining new ways to manage data, too. All of this has been facilitated by the evolution of blockchain technology itself.

Strategies for implementing digital learning infrastructure to support equitable outcomes

When implemented well, digital learning demonstrates the power to close equity gaps in these gateway courses and throughout the curriculum. Leveraging digital learning components, such as interactive and individualized course materials, leadership, and faculty across institutions opens the door to creative, effective strategies for improving student outcomes in gateway courses. With the adoption of adaptive courseware and accompanying data analysis, several colleges and universities reveal that digital learning is a promising tool for improving student success — and ultimately closing equity gaps — in high-enrollment, introductory courses. While we continue to learn about the potential of digital tools to enhance teaching and improve student outcomes, many institutions already effectively leverage digital technologies to support faculty in the redesign of critical, gateway courses.

The successes (and challenges) of the organizations profiled in this report yield six overall key recommendations for institutional leaders seeking to invest in digital learning infrastructure that is focused on serving minoritized students and supports the adoption of high-quality digital learning and pedagogy, particularly in the early undergraduate student experience. This document outlines specific recommendations and examples across each of the elements of digital learning infrastructure. This report focuses on building the core infrastructure needed for high-quality digital learning and is designed primarily for a mid- to senior-level academic administrators including department chairs, leaders of centers of teaching and learning, technology leaders, and academic leadership.

When Corporate Innovation Goes Bad — The 164 Biggest Product Failures Of All Time

From the DeLorean and New Coke to the Newton and Google Glass, here's a list of the biggest product flops from corporate giants.

Product innovation is one way that large corporations stay competitive in a rapidly changing marketplace, but it doesn’t always work out when big brands attempt innovation.

Below are what we consider to be the 164 biggest product flops of all time. We combed through thousands of media articles to select these product failures across major industries including tech software and hardware, consumer packaged goods, fast food, and electronics.

Understanding failure is crucial since so many accounts of innovation focus on the successes and so are affected by survivorship bias. This is the same spirit that animates our lists of 386 startup failure post-mortems and the 214 most expensive startup failures, as well as our list of the top 12 reasons startups fail.

Where did Omicron come from? Three key theories

The highly transmissible variant emerged with a host of unusual mutations. Now scientists are trying to work out how it evolved.

The birth of Omicron

Omicron is so different from earlier coronavirus variants, such as Alpha and Delta, that evolutionary virologists estimate its closest-known genetic ancestor probably dates back to more than a year ago, some time after mid-2020. Its unusual array of mutations evolved under virologists’ radar, so it seemed to come out of nowhere. Working out under what conditions this highly transmissible variant arose might help scientists to understand the risk of new variants emerging, and suggest steps to minimize it. Scientists are investigating three theories:

Although researchers have sequenced millions of SARS-CoV-2 genomes, they might simply have missed a series of mutations that eventually led to Omicron.

The variant might have evolved mutations in one person, as part of a long-term infection.

It could have emerged unseen in other animal hosts, such as mice or rats.

Researchers await a report, expected in early February, in which the World Health Organization’s recently formed Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) will grapple with Omicron’s origins.

The science behind the anti-ageing boom

Recently, an ageing-research initiative called Altos Labs was launched with US$3 billion in initial financing from backers including world’s richest person Jeff Bezos. It’s the latest in a surge of anti-ageing ventures that rely on ‘partial reprogramming’ using Yamanaka factors — four transcription factors that can reprogram cells into an embryonic-like state that can give rise to different cell types. Studies in rodents and in cultured mammalian cells have shown that partial reprogramming can dramatically reverse some signs of ageing. But it’s still a mystery what processes underlie this rejuvenation. And there are risks: reprogrammed cells readily form tumours known as teratomas, and some Yamanaka factors have been linked to cancer.

Rejuvenation by controlled reprogramming is the latest gambit in anti-aging

Startups are betting that partial reprogramming with Yamanaka factors may lead to age reversal, but hurdles remain.

Eleven body fluids we couldn’t live without

How is a human being like a fish?

By learning a bit more about 11 of these body fluids, we can develop a deeper appreciation for the beauty and complexity of our own biology. What exactly are these fluids, and what often unheralded contributions do they make?
