EU may propose labor laws for delivery platforms. EU targets Uber, Deliveroo model with gig workers' rights plan

Proposal is latest EU move to regulate tech companies. Rules could apply to more than 4 million gig economy workers.

Under the EU proposal, companies will be considered employers if they supervise the performance of workers through electronic means, restrict their ability to choose their working hours or tasks and prevent them from working for third parties.

Crucially, the proposal shifts the burden of proof onto companies when a dispute arises as to whether a worker is a self-employed contractor or an employee.

What is Digital Experience?

Digital experiences are the interactions between a user (customer, partner, or employee) and an organization that are only possible because of digital technologies. Essentially, they are the aspects of an experience that allow companies to go beyond simply digitizing processes to create services that use the full potential of online channels or other modern technologies.

How vulnerable is your personal information? 4 essential reads

When you enter your personal information or credit card number into a website, do you have a moment of hesitation? A nagging sense of vulnerability prompted by the parade of headlines about data breaches and hacks? If so, you probably push those feelings aside and hit the submit button, because, well, you need to shop, apply for that job, file that insurance claim, apply for that loan, or do any of the other sensitive activities that take place online these days.

First, the bad news. If you regularly enter sensitive information online, chances are you’ve had some data stolen somewhere at some point. By one estimate, the average American had data stolen at least four times in 2019. And the hits keep coming. For instance, a data breach at the wireless carrier T-Mobile reported in August 2021 affected 100 million people.

Now for some good news. Not all hacks are the same, and there are steps you can take to protect yourself. The Conversation gathered four articles from our archives that illuminate the types of threats to your online data, what data thieves do with your stolen information, and what you can do about it.

15 Engineers and Their Inventions That Defined Robotics

Robotics has become an essential part of modern society. But, how did we get here?

Robots have been around, in some form or other, since the ancient world. Early reports of wind-up automata existed in ancient Greece and Rome, and basic mechanical 'robots' were also designed and built in China. Even the polymath Leonardo Da Vinci presented an idea of a mechanical knight in the 15th century that is eerily similar to some of the humanoids that the modern world has become accustomed to.

However, our modern concept of robots wouldn't appear until the Industrial Revolution, with the notion of the android (humanoid robot) making its first debut in 20th-century film and science fiction literature.

Love them or fear them, robots have become an integral part of our world, making their way into medicine, the automotive industry, aerospace, and entertainment. According to recent reports, the robotics industry is expected to reach $158 billion by 2025, a massive leap from its 2020 valuee of $66.48 billion. Robots are here to stay.

This article celebrates the robotics engineers who have or continue to push the realms of robotics forward.

AI in marketing, consumer research and psychology: A systematic literature review and research agenda

This study is the first to provide an integrated view on the body of knowledge of artificial intelligence (AI) published in the marketing, consumer research, and psychology literature. By leveraging a systematic literature review using a data-driven approach and quantitative methodology (including bibliographic coupling), this study provides an overview of the emerging intellectual structure of AI research in the three bodies of literature examined. We identified eight topical clusters: (1) memory and computational logic; (2) decision making and cognitive processes; (3) neural networks; (4) machine learning and linguistic analysis; (5) social media and text mining; (6) social media content analytics; (7) technology acceptance and adoption; and (8) big data and robots. Furthermore, we identified a total of 412 theoretical lenses used in these studies with the most frequently used being: (1) the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology; (2) game theory; (3) theory of mind; (4) theory of planned behavior; (5) computational theories; (6) behavioral reasoning theory; (7) decision theories; and (8) evolutionary theory. Finally, we propose a research agenda to advance the scholarly debate on AI in the three literatures studied with an emphasis on cross-fertilization of theories used across fields, and neglected research topics.

Action Plan 2022: A Healthy Internet for Future Generations

Three decades ago, it was an ordinary object you’d find in a kitchen: a wok. But through ingenuity and the desire to make the world a better place, it was repurposed as a Wi-Fi antenna, making Internet access possible for those hardest to reach.

There is no doubt about it: The Internet has unleashed human creativity, determination, and innovation—and since the Internet Society’s founding 30 years ago, people have applied these qualities to address the world’s biggest challenges.

The Internet needs these people.

Growing, protecting, and strengthening the Internet has been essential for decades, yet the next 30 years will be pivotal. Right now, we have the chance to shape how the world accesses and uses the Internet.

The actions we take now are critical.

The Internet Society’s Action Plan 2022 provides a roadmap to keep the Internet a resource for everyone, everywhere. For decades to come.

How often do you poo? New research shows bowel habits are written in our DNA

Do you “go” once a day? Maybe you go twice, or even three times? Or perhaps you only go a few times a week? Yes, we’re talking about pooing. In our new study, we’ve found how often you go is, at least to some degree, a function of your genetic make-up.

You might be wondering why this is something we chose to study. While many people rarely give a second thought to going when the urge presents itself, for others, common gastrointestinal conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) cause problems.

IBS affects up to 10% of people globally and is characterised by abdominal pain and bloating, irregular bowel habits, constipation and diarrhoea. Although not life threatening, it can severely affect a person’s quality of life.

We don’t know exactly what causes IBS, which means therapeutic options are limited, mostly directed at treating the symptoms rather than targeting specific causes. We also don’t have a way to tell who is at increased risk of IBS.

In this climate, our general research aims to identify genetic risk factors for IBS by looking at genomic information and health-related data across large groups of people. The idea is that our findings may, in time, pave the way towards better treatment options.

In our latest study, published in the journal Cell Genomics, we looked at how often people poo – or their “stool frequency” – and how this correlates with their genes. Our findings provide clues as to the genetic risk factors associated with IBS.

Kids, like adults, cope with stress and anxiety in many different ways.

As a result, rates of obesity and eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia have both increased among young people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here are four recent articles from The Conversation’s archives that deal with kids, body weight and the COVID-19 pandemic.
