The Microprocessor Is 50: Celebrating the Intel 4004

Intel introduced the Intel 4004 to the general market by placing an ad in the November 15, 1971 issue of Electronic News, which was a prominent industry magazine at the time.

Originally, Intel devised a chipset (called the MCS-4—short for “Micro Computer System”) composed of four integrated circuits (ICs) for the  Japanese calculator manufacturer called Busicom. In delivering its solution, Intel developed and commercialized the world’s first single-chip microprocessor, the Intel 4004. The Intel 4004 first launched as part of the Busicom 141-PF calculator in mid-1971.

Microprocessor technology has dramatically changed since 1971, when Intel’s 4004 CPU ran at a mere 740 KHz and contained only 2,250 transistors using a 10 micrometer process.

Intel’s latest top-of-the-line desktop CPU, the recently-announced (on 27th Oct 2021), Intel Core i9-12900K runs at 5.20 GHz (5,200,000 kHz) and contains ~21,700,000,000 transistors and uses a 7 nanometer  process.

Text and Data Mining of In-Copyright Works: Is It Legal?

Text and data mining (TDM) uses statistical analysis tools to extract new knowledge from large quantities of text or data for purposes by finding patterns, discovering relationships, and analyzing semantics. It is used in a wide variety of fields from biomedical research to digital humanities. Copyright poses no obstacle to TDM research as long as the corpus of text and data being analyzed consists solely of public domain works.a Copyright may, however, be a barrier to TDM research as to vast arrays of in-copyright works created in the past century.

This is because copyright regulates making copies of protected works and TDM requires researchers to make several types of copies during different stages of the process: from scanning copies of analog works to formatting the texts and data to preparing them for processing to extract useful information from the vast quantities being searched to storing the data after mining is completed.

15 Different Types of Robots -- Explained

AI and Robotics are undoubtedly two of the most promising fields of study right now. These two will certainly define the future of humanity. At present, we have ultra-modern machines with sleek designs, agile and highly capable bodies, which are capable of doing almost any kind of work with efficiency. We also have machine intelligence, which is literally revolutionizing the way we do most of our work.

While AI is always an interesting subject to talk about, as we did countless times here on our website, let’s talk about robots today. As you might know, there are many different ways in which one could differentiate robots. I am sure that you know at least some of them, but there is always more.

Basically, robots are divided into two broad categories: based on their applications and the second is based on kinematics or locomotion. Below, we have only classified robots based on kinematics. Why is it so? Well, the application of any subject, especially robots’, vaguely describes its characteristics. For instance, two different types of robots can perform the same job, yielding the same result.

We have only mentioned major robotic types, and they are further subdivided based on kinematics.

Entrepreneurship classes aren’t just for business majors

As professors of engineering and entrepreneurship, and authors of a new book on teaching entrepreneurial thinking to college students, we have studied how entrepreneurial skills can improve students’ confidence, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.

Such curriculum is a staple in business schools, especially for students who want to start a company. But it has the potential to benefit all students – including majors in engineering, agriculture and even the arts.

Graduates who develop an entrepreneurial mindset learn to habitually and intuitively recognize new opportunities and create value within an organization. This value could be new product development or related to continuous improvement, like implementing a more ergonomic workspace to combat healthy and safety issues. These entrepreneurial skills leave graduates better prepared to enter today’s workforce and solve the complex challenges raised by the pandemic.

Personalization: Where Data and Content Intersect

Personalization long ago reached buzzword status, yet customer demands for hyper-personalized interactions have yet to become a reality. And that’s a problem. After all, if you are collecting customers’ personal and behavioral information as they interact with your brand, it’s fair that they expect you to return the favor with a personalized, highly relevant experience.

Businesses turn to vendors from a wide variety of categories to deliver on this demand, including (but not limited to): customer data platforms, CMSs, personalization engines, digital experience platforms, ecommerce systems and more.

Scott Brinker's martech landscape supergraphic breaks down the 8000 plus marketing technology applications listed into six high-level categories. The two primary categories relevant to the personalization conversation are "Content and Experience" and "Data." Data gives us the understanding of the customer, and the Content and Experience category covers the ability to create, manage and deliver content to your audience.

4 reasons why museums aren’t cashing in on NFTs yet

Can NFTs generate the revenue many museums sorely need? Some are issuing their own tokens, including the British Museum and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The Miami Institute of Contemporary Art accepted an early NFT from a donor. There’s even an NFT of entire museum called the Museum of Digital Life.

Yet, more than six months into this disruption of the art world, museums have generally engaged very little with NFTs. As researchers who examine both the finances of nonprofit organizations and the growth in NFTs, crypto-assets and other associated blockchain applications, the article highlights four primary reasons why museums have failed to turn the NFT craze into a financial windfall.

Five books that will change how you think about the environment and climate change

We are constantly being bombarded with dire warnings about the environmental and climate emergency. Act now, we are told, or face an unprecedented global catastrophe. But while the solutions proposed – solar panels, heat pumps, eating less meat – are no doubt necessary, they are for the most part unimaginative and uninspiring – and isolated from a wider system of beliefs whereby they might acquire genuine meaning.

The following five books offer an alternative perspective. In contrast to the simplistic idea that all we need to do is implement a set of technological and lifestyle changes, they offer a new way of understanding and relating to nature.

Gaia by James Lovelock (1979)

Should Trees Have Standing? by Christopher D. Stone (1972)

Biomimicry by Janine Benyus (1997)

Computing for Cultural Heritage

Information professionals have been experiencing a massive shift to digital in the way collections are being donated, held and accessed. In the British Library’s digital collections there are e-books, maps, digitised newspapers, journal titles, sound recordings and over 500 terabytes of preserved data from the UK Web Archive. Yearly, the library sees 6 million catalogue searches by web users with almost 4 million items consulted online. This amounts to a vast amount of potential cultural heritage data available to researchers, and it requires complex digital workflows to curate, collect, manage, provide access, and help researchers computationally make sense of it all.

Staff at collecting institutions like the British Library and the National Archives, UK are engaging in computationally driven projects like never before, but often without the benefit of data skills and computational thinking to support them. That is where a program like Computing for Cultural Heritage can help information professionals, allowing them to upskill and tackle issues – like building new digital systems and services, supporting collaborative, computational and data-driven research using digital collections and data, or deploying simple scripts to make everyday tasks easier – with confidence.

The 7 types of rest that every person needs

Have you ever tried to fix an ongoing lack of energy by getting more sleep — only to do so and still feel exhausted?

If that’s you, here’s the secret: Sleep and rest are not the same thing, although many of us incorrectly confuse the two.

We go through life thinking we’ve rested because we have gotten enough sleep — but in reality we are missing out on the other types of rest we desperately need. The result is a culture of high-achieving, high-producing, chronically tired and chronically burned-out individuals. We’re suffering from a rest deficit because we don’t understand the true power of rest.

Rest should equal restoration in seven key areas of your life.

Five ways to cut down on food waste – and why it matters

When people think about ways to help the environment, encourage biodiversity and decrease greenhouse gases, they don’t usually think about the impact of food waste. And yet food waste is responsible for up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Producing food for a growing global population is a complex challenge with a lot of negative environmental consequences, so food waste creates unnecessary strain on our fragile environment
