Cassyni aims to make online seminars more findable and citable

Peter Vincent, an engineer at Imperial College London and one of Cassyni’s co-founders, estimates that there are around one million academic seminars worldwide each year. Although seminars are an important part of academic discourse, they lack technical solutions to make them more discoverable, he says.

The software tool enables webinar organizers to plan events, issue reminders and archive the results, says its co-founder.

Need a paper? Get a plug-in

A collection of web-browser plug-ins is making the scholarly literature more discoverable.

For researchers with limited library resources, literature searches can seem frustratingly hit or miss: sometimes, they find exactly what they need first time, but sometimes, the key reference is hidden behind a paywall.

But some researchers find it challenging to access the publications they need. For example, many authors make their papers available on public repositories, but those are hard to pull up in searches. Other times, researchers can access a paywalled paper through their institutions, but find themselves blocked when trying to access it using a different network at home.

Increasingly, however, scientists are turning to tools such as Unpaywall, Open Access Button, Lazy Scholar and Kopernio. These tools all do more or less the same thing: tap into an overlapping set of data sources to identify and retrieve open-access copies of research papers that are inaccessible or hard to find through other routes.

Good Proctor or “Big Brother”? Ethics of Online Exam Supervision Technologies

Online exam supervision technologies have recently generated significant controversy and concern. Their use is now booming due to growing demand for online courses and for off-campus assessment options amid COVID-19 lockdowns. Online proctoring technologies purport to effectively oversee students sitting online exams by using artificial intelligence (AI) systems supplemented by human invigilators. Such technologies have alarmed some students who see them as a “Big Brother-like” threat to liberty and privacy, and as potentially unfair and discriminatory. However, some universities and educators defend their judicious use. Critical ethical appraisal of online proctoring technologies is overdue. This essay provides one of the first sustained moral philosophical analyses of these technologies, focusing on ethical notions of academic integrity, fairness, non-maleficence, transparency, privacy, autonomy, liberty, and trust. Most of these concepts are prominent in the new field of AI ethics, and all are relevant to education. The essay discusses these ethical issues. It also offers suggestions for educational institutions and educators interested in the technologies about the kinds of inquiries they need to make and the governance and review processes they might need to adopt to justify and remain accountable for using online proctoring technologies. The rapid and contentious rise of proctoring software provides a fruitful ethical case study of how AI is infiltrating all areas of life. The social impacts and moral consequences of this digital technology warrant ongoing scrutiny and study.

Unis are using artificial intelligence to keep students sitting exams honest. But this creates its own problems

Universities are increasingly using computer programs to supervise university students sitting their exams. Is this the future of testing?

Due to the pandemic, institutions worldwide have rapidly adopted exam software like Examplify, ExamSoft and ProctorU.

Proctoring technology allows exam-takers to be monitored off-campus. They can sit exams in their homes, instead of a person having to watch them in a traditional exam room. Some programs simply enable a person to supervise students remotely.

More sophisticated, automated proctoring software hijacks the student’s computer to block and monitor suspicious activity. These programs often use artificial intelligence (AI) to scrutinise exam conduct.

Our recent research paper explored the ethics of automated proctoring. We found the promise of the software alluring, but it carries substantial risks.

9 Bold Predictions For The Future Of Privacy And Data

Two years ago the European Union (EU) introduced the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a law designed to give individuals greater control of their data. Organisations, both inside and outside the EU, needed to process data in a way that was “lawful, fair and transparent”, with data controllers processing the minimum amount of data on individuals living in the EU.

The regulation also mandated the secure handling of data using “appropriate technical and organisational measures.” Users were able to request a copy of the data collected on them.

Public awareness of data privacy grew dramatically. While GDPR may only be compulsory for the data of EU citizens, it was also good practice if companies wanted to retain global customer trust.

Two years later, the draconian fines and sanctions included within GDPR have rarely been used (with a few notable exceptions) – so surely this is an indication that most companies have stuck to the regulations and that our personal data is safe…. [End of Article: note to editor – that was easy]

There might still be a few (not so) small problems, not the least of which has been a recent EU court ruling that struck down Privacy Shield, which, when coupled with the lack of progress bringing forward federal privacy regulation in the U.S. … understanding all of this will help you navigate the evolving privacy and cyber security landscape. So, time for a few bold predictions and recommendations, these are my opinions and not those of Commvault, and you can hold me (but not Commvault) to them if you wish.

Job Crafting: A Skill for the Future

The concept has been around for 20 years. Yet the skills involved in job crafting are more pertinent to career success today than they have ever been before.

Employees engaged in job crafting shape their work tasks, develop their work relationships and give meaning to their jobs to enhance their personal well-being and job satisfaction.

As the pandemic has banished millions of knowledge workers to their home offices, job crafting is a great way to address personal struggles with motivation. This applies especially to those for whom teamwork and social interactions with co-workers were a primary source of job motivation. These employees will need to find new ways to give meaning to their jobs while stuck at home.

Developing intrinsic job motivation is a central part of job crafting – and an indispensable part of successful remote work. Even workers who may not have felt a need to engage in job crafting prior to the pandemic may come to see it as a sensible career strategy at a time when opportunities for career advancement are limited.

Job crafting is an employee-driven process. Human resources departments can do little to “prevent” people from job crafting. Nor should they. Job crafting often leads to higher employee engagement – and more engaged and happier employees usually also are more productive employees.

Of course, managers will need to step in if an employee pursues values and goals that contradict company strategy. They may also need to intervene if an employee takes on too many extra tasks and is no longer able to fulfill his or her basic job duties – or risks burnout due to overwork.

But an employee who engages in job crafting displays skills and characteristics prized in the economy of tomorrow. If you are an employee, engaging in some job crafting can help future-proof your career. And if you are an employer, remember: Job crafters are keepers!

So let’s discuss some of the characteristics job crafters display while taking ownership of their jobs:

It’s a New Era for Mental Health at Work

In 2019, employers were just starting to grasp the prevalence of mental health challenges at work, the need to address stigma, and the emerging link to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). One silver lining amid all the disruption and trauma over the last two years is the normalization of these challenges. In a follow-up study of their 2019 Mental Health at Work Report, Mind Share Partners’ 2021 Mental Health at Work Report, the authors offer a rare comparison of the state of mental health, stigma, and work culture in U.S. workplaces before and during the pandemic. They also present a summary of what they learned and their recommendations for what employers need to do to support their employees’ mental health
