Inclusive Workplaces: Focus on Enterprise Perceptions

McKinsey has broadened their perspective on  how to create truly inclusive workplaces and inspired the development of a modern and revolutionary inclusion model. The model includes 17 practices (i.e., frequency of desired behaviors) and six outcomes (i.e., perceptions of effectiveness) that form the backbone of the inclusion assessment.

Enterprise perceptions of inclusion are driven by seven organizational systems practices and three leader practices. Seven practices that help improve employees’ personal experience of inclusion.

Function delivery network: Extending serverless computing for heterogeneous platforms

Serverless computing has rapidly grown following the launch of Amazon's Lambda platform. Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) a key enabler of serverless computing allows an application to be decomposed into simple, standalone functions that are executed on a FaaS platform. The FaaS platform is responsible for deploying and facilitating resources to the functions. Several of today's cloud applications spread over heterogeneous connected computing resources and are highly dynamic in their structure and resource requirements. However, FaaS platforms are limited to homogeneous clusters and homogeneous functions and do not account for the data access behavior of functions before scheduling. We introduce an extension of FaaS to heterogeneous clusters and to support heterogeneous functions through a network of distributed heterogeneous target platforms called Function Delivery Network (FDN). A target platform is a combination of a cluster of homogeneous nodes and a FaaS platform on top of it. FDN provides Function-Delivery-as-a-Service (FDaaS), delivering the function to the right target platform. We showcase the opportunities such as varied target platform's characteristics, possibility of collaborative execution between multiple target platforms, and localization of data that the FDN offers in fulfilling two objectives: Service Level Objective (SLO) requirements and energy efficiency when scheduling functions by evaluating over five distributed target platforms using the FDNInspector, a tool developed by us for benchmarking distributed target platforms. Scheduling functions on an edge target platform in our evaluation reduced the overall energy consumption by 17× without violating the SLO requirements in comparison to scheduling on a high-end target platform.

Fueling Post-COVID-19 Growth with Blockchain & Gig Economy Strategies

Blockchain is commonly discussed as a high-potential technology in the fintech domain. However, it is often criticized as being a solution looking for a problem. Zion Schum, Isaiah Morales, and Roger Yin seek to address this issue by providing readers with an understanding of blockchain-enabled technologies and the gig economy, and how blockchain can be harnessed to develop innovative business models to facilitate growth post-COVID-19. They touch on several exciting opportunities blockchain affords, including cryptocurrencies, tokenization, decentralized applications, and smart contracts. Through the lens of Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur’s Business Model Canvas, the authors illustrate how leveraging blockchain and the gig economy can both cut costs and increase revenues.

Robots are coming for the lawyers – which may be bad for tomorrow’s attorneys but great for anyone in need of cheap legal assistance

Imagine what a lawyer does on a given day: researching cases, drafting briefs, advising clients. While technology has been nibbling around the edges of the legal profession for some time, it’s hard to imagine those complex tasks being done by a robot.

And it is those complicated, personalized tasks that have led technologists to include lawyers in a broader category of jobs that are considered pretty safe from a future of advanced robotics and artificial intelligence.

But, as we discovered in a recent research collaboration to analyze legal briefs using a branch of artificial intelligence known as machine learning, lawyers’ jobs are a lot less safe than we thought. It turns out that you don’t need to completely automate a job to fundamentally change it. All you need to do is automate part of it.

While this may be bad news for tomorrow’s lawyers, it could be great for their future clients – particularly those who have trouble affording legal assistance.

THE EFFECT OF STANDARDS ON SAFETY AND PRODUCT LIABILITY LITIGATION

Product liability has created problems for manufacturers and product sellers for many decades. These problems have been exacerbated by the expansion of product liability laws throughout the world. In addition, there has been a proliferation of safety regulatory requirements, starting in the United States (U.S.) and then moving to the European Union. In addition, countries such as Japan, China, Australia, Canada, Brazil, and South Africa have all recently established or strengthened their product safety regulatory regimes and requirements.

This all creates additional challenges for manufacturers who want to comply with all laws, regulations, and standards in any country where they sell their products. Such companies may also need to consider safety requirements in countries where they do not sell products if they believe that these requirements establish a floor for safety that they want to meet.

This article will discuss the basic kinds of defects that can be alleged in any product liability case, the law as it pertains to compliance with standards, and some tips on how to deal with the issue of standards compliance.

eBook: Technology-Enabled Learning: Policy, Pedagogy and Practice

Teaching and learning have undergone considerable transformation from the traditional classroom model to the current online and blended models. Developments in information and communications technologies hold the key to such transformation. Seizing the opportunities and affordances of these technologies, COL’s Technology-Enabled Learning (TEL) initiative has focused on several activities to support governments and educational institutions in the Commonwealth since July 2015. // Significant and sustainable interventions include: the Commonwealth Digital Education Leadership Training in Action programme; ICT in education policy development, including open educational resources policy and implementation; massive open online courses on TEL and blended learning practices; systematic TEL implementation in educational institutions; and advanced ICT skills development. // Technology-Enabled Learning: Policy, Pedagogy and Practice, based mostly on various TEL projects in the last five years, presents diverse experiences of TEL from a critical research perspective, offering lessons that can be deployed elsewhere. The book’s 17 chapters provide success stories about the planned and systematic integration of technology in teaching and learning, and present models for online training at scale using massive open online courses and other platforms. Within the framework of the policy–technology–capacity approach to TEL implementation at the micro, meso and macro levels, the chapters also provide guidelines for researching and evaluating similar projects and interventions. // In the post-COVID-19 world of education, the lessons learnt and recommendations in this book will help policy makers and educational leaders rethink existing models of education and training.
