What you
need to know about online tracking (and how to stop it)
Let’s say you’re on an outdoor pizza
oven website dreaming about someday owning one. Mmm pizza. Next you switch
gears and visit a fitness site; lo and behold an ad for the pizza oven you were
just looking at is there, too. Then you go to YouTube to see how easy it would
be to build your own pizza oven (it’s too hard), but first you have to sit
through an advertisement about, you guessed it, that same pizza oven. Time to
check social media on your phone, and there it is again, grinning at you as a
sponsored post in your feed.
It’s not just a feeling. That ad
really is following you and it happens all the time. So how do these sites all
know exactly how to tempt you to a point of annoyance? Is it magic? Nope. The
answer is web trackers.
Create an outstanding digital footprint to attract better
offers
In
today’s competitive software market, finding the right job can be tough. And
even though the job market continues to grow, standing out from the host of
other candidates is as challenging as ever. Technology workers tend to have
relatively short tenures, which increases competition, since even programmers
with good jobs end up having to move. Additionally, workers tend to get a raise
when they get a new job, further incentivising the search for a role elsewhere.
While an online presence isn’t absolutely mandatory, having a great digital
footprint can make your profile stand out from the crowd. Not only that, a
well-curated digital profile can attract interesting unsolicited offers and
networking opportunities that you might not have otherwise discovered.
The
Origin Story of Data Science
Today, data science is defined as a multidisciplinary field that uses scientific methods, processes, algorithms, and systems to extract knowledge and insights from data. It emerged thanks to the convergence of a wide range of factors: New ideas among academic statisticians, the spread of computer science across various fields, and a favorable economic context.
This
post examines the origins of this field to get a better understanding of why it
is a distinct academic discipline.
How to
Reduce Your Carbon Footprint at Home
From
zero waste to low impact to carbon footprint, there are so many buzzwords
surrounding sustainable living these days. One helpful way to get started on a
sustainable journey is to understand your carbon footprint, which is an
interesting way of measuring your environmental impact. Read on for everything
you need to know about carbon footprints, how to calculate your personal carbon
footprint, and easy ways to lower that number.
The ultimate guide to
preparing for the coding interview
Every company has a different way of interviewing
its candidates, and you need to be prepared for all those possible scenarios. The
smaller the company, the less sophisticated the interviewing structure. Smaller
companies and startups will probably only do 1 - 2 live coding interviews
(interactive interviews with a tool like Codepen or an actual IDE, or
whiteboard interviews) or they might give you a small project to complete on
your own. Large companies such as Google or Facebook start with a phone screen
with a recruiter, then do 1 – 2 phone technical interviews where you do some
coding, and then you move to the on-site interviews.
Regardless of the structure and the number of
interviews, you need to be prepared for the following types of questions:
- Technical questions
- Design questions
- Behavioral questions
This post reviews each one of these question types
and sets some goals that one has to accomplish in order to be successful.
As a
PhD Examiner … My Top 25 Tips for PhD students
I
have done many MSc/PhD examinations, and I enjoy them so much. With PhD theses
I especially like seeing the face of the candidate when I take the thesis out
of my bag, and you can’t see the thesis for Post-it notes. This should
hopefully show that I’ve read every single word in it, and, hopefully,
understood most of it.
So
here’s my top Ten 25 hints on how to help your examiner (many of these should
also be relevant to MSc thesis’ too — to a student aiming at a 1st class Hons
dissertation):
The
most mind-boggling scientific discoveries of 2019 include the first image of a
black hole, a giant squid sighting, and an exoplanet with water vapor
These
are 22 of the biggest scientific accomplishments of the year.
Edtech
policy is failing globally and needs a ‘critical update’
A
new report published recently by the Varkey Foundation’s Atlantis Group of 26
former education ministers and heads of government, including former UK
Secretary of State for Education Justine Greening, has found that Edtech is
failing to fulfil its promise in classrooms throughout the world and that
policy governing its use needs a critical update.
The
report, System failure: Why Edtech policy needs a critical update, found that
whilst technology should be working to save teachers time, when tech fails to
work properly it can have the opposite effect.
A time
to fast
Nutrient
composition and caloric intake have traditionally been used to devise optimized
diets for various phases of life. Adjustment of meal size and frequency have
emerged as powerful tools to ameliorate and postpone the onset of disease and
delay aging, whereas periods of fasting, with or without reduced energy intake,
can have profound health benefits. The underlying physiological processes
involve periodic shifts of metabolic fuel sources, promotion of repair
mechanisms, and the optimization of energy utilization for cellular and
organismal health. Future research endeavors should be directed to the
integration of a balanced nutritious diet with controlled meal size and
patterns and periods of fasting to develop better strategies to prevent,
postpone, and treat the socioeconomical burden of chronic diseases associated
with aging.
Open access: Could defeat be snatched from the jaws of victory?
When news broke early in 2019 that the University of
California had walked away from licensing negotiations with the world’s largest
scholarly publisher (Elsevier), a wave of triumphalism spread through the OA
Twittersphere.
The news had added piquancy coming as it did in the
wake of a radical new European OA initiative called Plan S. Proposed in 2018 by
a group of European funders calling themselves cOAlition S, the aim of Plan S
is to make all publicly funded research open access by 2021.
Buoyed up by these two developments open access
advocates concluded that – 17 years after the Budapest Open Access Initiative
(BOAI) – the goal of universal (or near-universal) open access is finally
within reach. Or as the Berkeley librarian who led the UC negotiations put it,
“a tipping point” has been reached. But could defeat be snatched from the jaws
of success?

30 visions for a better world in 2030

IFIP WG8.6 Working Conference during 17-19 Dec 2020 at IIM Trichy
The
focus of this event is particularly on understanding the diffusion and adoption
of emerging information technologies and systems (i.e., Artificial
Intelligence, Blockchain, Fintech Applications, Internet of Things, Social
Media), which are expected to have substantial impact on future economic
development of society, organizations and individuals. A review of the role of
information technologies particularly over the past two decades clearly shows
the strong link between technology adoption and social economic development in
many economies. The Gartner report in 2019 lists “Top Strategic Technology”
trends including Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, autonomous things
(Robots, vehicles, drones etc.) among others as the game changers that could
revolutionize industries and their strategic models through 2023.
