India’s
new unicorns
In 2013, when Aileen Lee, founder of
Cowboy Ventures, coined the term unicorn to refer to technology startups with
valuations over US$1 billion, there were 39 unicorns in the United States.
India had none. Its fledgling startup scene faced significant barriers: limited
funding, a dearth of talent, inadequate infrastructure, and a plethora of
cultural and social challenges. For college graduates who aspired to management
jobs in large IT firms and multinational corporations, entrepreneurship seemed
unappealing. Young male entrepreneurs often talked about being rejected by
prospective brides and their parents.
"Students need to develop 21st century skills which
are analytical, applied and outcome oriented": M.K. Sridhar
Interview
with Prof M.K. Sridhar, Member of the committee to draft the National Education
Policy 2019 who has been an educationist all through and has also served as
Member Secretary and Executive Director of Karnataka Knowledge Commission and
Karnataka State Innovative Council. He is also President of Centre for
Educational and Social studies as well as ICSSR Senior Fellow at ISEC,
Bangalore.
The
draft National Education Policy 2019 was in the public domain for the views of
the people. Being a member of the
high-level committee to draft the new policy, what is your view on transforming
the system of education in the country?
Now
that the last date for public comments on draft NEP has expired, there is
the likelihood that the draft policy
will be implemented without major
changes.
The
proposed policy would give a vision, dream, and direction for Indian education
over the next 20 to 30 years. It will also result in building a new India with
the help of new aspirations, fresh ideas and innovative approach. It will
unleash the potential of India as a dynamic and sustainable knowledge society
by empowering the individuals and institutions with autonomy and flexibility.
A
new era of diversity, flexibility and grass root orientation will be witnessed
in the years to come. It is likely to provide a new narrative for
education by having India centred
education with strong emphasis on Indian context and content. This is how the
draft NEP is expected to transform the education system in our country.

Will a
GDPR-Style Data Protection Law Work For India?
The European Union’s (EU’s) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) took effect in May 2018, harmonizing data protection and privacy requirements across the EU.1 Many other countries have either implemented data protection requirements or are in the process of considering them. In the United States, for example, Senator Elizabeth Warren has proposed a bill to expand criminal liability for the executives of companies that suffer data breaches.2
India,
too, is taking steps to enact a data protection framework modeled along the
lines of the GDPR. In July 2017, the government of India appointed a Committee
of Experts on a Data Protection Framework for India, or Data Protection
Committee (DPC), under the chairmanship of Justice B.N. Srikrishna, to study
issues related to data protection in India.3 Though the committee submitted its
report—and proposed a comprehensive law on data protection—on July 27, 2018, it
failed to weigh the economic costs and benefits of implementing a GDPR-style
law in India.
Emerging
economies—like India—that are considering such proposals need to carefully
evaluate the direct and indirect costs of such laws vis-à-vis the benefits from
a data protection framework. A survey of the existing literature that estimates
these costs and benefits highlights the need for further research on data
protection laws.
How to
Say No: The Definitive Guide
Do
you hate saying no? Are you always saying yes to others at the expense of
yourself?
I’ll
admit it — I used to find it very hard to say no. Whenever someone approached
me for something, be it to pick my brain or assist them on a personal project,
I would say yes. Part of it was because I didn’t want to leave others in the
lurch. Part of it was because I didn’t want to disappoint people. Another part
was because I was afraid that the other person would be unhappy if I said no.
Over
time though, I realized that saying yes came with its consequences. Because I
kept saying yes to everyone, I would have little time for the things on my
agenda. My days would be filled with things that others wanted from me, with
little to no time for things of my own. I would regularly sacrifice my sleep
just so that I could be there for everyone.
It
wasn’t long before I became weighed down by the constant pressure to be there
for everyone. I was utterly miserable, burnt out, and unhappy. My time was no
longer my own — it was taken over by what others wanted from me.
The 6 Levels of Vehicle Autonomy Explained
Researchers forecast that by 2025 we’ll see approximately
8 million autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles on the road. Before merging
onto roadways, self-driving cars will first have to progress through 6 levels
of driver assistance technology advancements.
What exactly are these levels? And where are we now?
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) defines 6
levels of driving automation ranging from 0 (fully manual) to 5 (fully
autonomous). These levels have been adopted by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Data
Science’s Most Misunderstood Hero
The
top trophy hire in data science is elusive, and it’s no surprise: “full-stack”
data scientist means mastery of machine learning, statistics, and analytics.
When teams can’t get their hands on a three-in-one polymath, they set their
sights on luring the most impressive prize among the single-origin specialists.
Who gets the pedestal?
Today’s
fashion in data science favors flashy sophistication with a dash of sci-fi,
making AI and machine learning darlings of the hiring circuit. Alternative
challengers for the alpha spot come from statistics, thanks to a century-long
reputation for rigor and mathematical superiority. What about analysts?
Researchers
invent device that generates light from the cold night sky – here's what it
means for millions living off grid
More
than 1.7 billion people worldwide still don’t have a reliable electricity
connection. For many of them, solar power is their potential energy saviour –
at least when the sun is shining.
Technology
to store excess solar power during the dark hours is improving. But what if we
could generate electricity from the cold night sky? Researchers at Stanford and
UCLA have just done exactly that. Don’t expect it to become solar’s dark twin
just yet, but it could play an important role in the energy demands of the
future.
Envisioning
and Designing the Floating Future
A
prototype deployed in San Francisco Bay may signal what’s to come: floating
buildings, or whole communities, built to withstand sea-level rise.
Estonia
is running its country like a tech company
Estonia
is often described as a genuinely digital society. Today a majority of
government services are offered 24/7 online, and data integrity is ensured by
blockchain technology. You can use medical e-prescriptions, file taxes, or even
buy a car online without needing to go to the vehicle registration office.
There are only a few things that you still need to do in the analog world, such
as get married or buy property.
Industry 4.0 - the Nine Technologies Transforming Industrial
Production
The rise of new digital industrial technology, known
as Industry 4.0, is a transformation that makes it possible to gather and
analyze data across machines, enabling faster, more flexible, and more
efficient processes to produce higher-quality goods at reduced costs. This
manufacturing revolution will increase productivity, shift economics, foster
industrial growth, and modify the profile of the workforce—ultimately changing
the competitiveness of companies and regions.
Advanced digital technology is already used in
manufacturing, but with Industry 4.0, it will transform production. It will lead
to greater efficiencies and change traditional production relationships among
suppliers, producers, and customers—as well as between human and machine. Nine
technology trends form the building blocks of Industry 4.0.
The World’s 50 Biggest Things
From caves that can swallow entire domed stadiums 23
times over to a humungous fungus that's singlehandedly destroying a forest,
there are a bunch of big things—really big things—in and out of this world. Big
planes. Big trains. Big holes. Big poles. Here are some of the biggest.
With Category Theory, Mathematics Escapes From Equality
e equal sign is the bedrock of mathematics. It seems
to make an entirely fundamental and uncontroversial statement: These things are
exactly the same.
But there is a growing community of mathematicians
who regard the equal sign as math’s original error. They see it as a veneer
that hides important complexities in the way quantities are related —
complexities that could unlock solutions to an enormous number of problems.
They want to reformulate mathematics in the looser language of equivalence.
10 principles of workforce transformation
When you (or your board members) think about
thriving in a digital world, you probably think first about technology. It’s
evolving so fast that your business constantly has to adapt. But the greatest
challenge is not the tech itself: It’s developing a knowledgeable,
strategically adept, cognitively flexible, and proficient workforce. You want
people who can command artificial intelligence, analyze data, invent and apply
solutions on the fly, and slide effortlessly into new roles as needed. All the
while, they should keep their skills sharp with mobile apps and online
self-taught courses. Ideas should flow from all corners of the company, whether
from full-time managers or a pool of gig workers who jump in when work heats
up.
How to raise the skills of your employees to meet
your digital challenges? The 10 principles below can help you ready your
company’s workforce for the future.
How the Economics of Data Science is Creating New Sources of Value
