Autonomous Vehicle Technology Futures 2019

The editors of Autonomous Vehicle Technology asked top executives of vehicle technology and thought leaders on the built environment to contribute the latest thinking on the future, benefits, and challenges for vehicle autonomy, connectivity, electrification, and mobility services—as well as the broader transportation ecosystem. What follows for the next 27 pages are what’s in store for vehicle autonomy, including artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, the importance of simulation in the development and deployment process, enabling robust testing and validation, and fleet orchestration to deliver a successful autonomous mobility service. On the vehicle sensor side, we look at rethinking and demystifying LiDAR as well as Smart Cities and V2X thermal imaging. On a higher level of abstraction are connected data initiatives, 5G connectivity, and the vital role of tech development ecosystems. For electric vehicles, in-wheel motors with active suspension show promise for autonomous fleets. On the built environment side, we look at reclaiming urban spaces for people and an innovative public private partnership for forward-thinking intelligent transit.

We Analyzed 14 Of The Biggest Direct-to-Consumer Success Stories To Figure Out The Secrets To Their Growth — Here’s What We Learned

Today, a new generation of disruptThe 14 companies we’ll look at were born on platforms that have dominated the post-dot-com internet — Amazon, Facebook, Google, Instagram, and Kickstarter.ive brands are shaking up retail — direct-to-consumer e-commerce companies that build, market, sell, and ship their products themselves, without middlemen.

10 Principles for Winning the Game of Digital Disruption

If you haven’t noticed, a high-stakes global game of digital disruption is currently under way. It is fueled by the latest wave of technology: advances in artificial intelligence, data analytics, robotics, the Internet of Things, and new software-enabled industrial platforms that incorporate all these technologies and more. Every enterprise leader recognizes that, as a result, the prevailing business models in his or her industry could drastically and fundamentally change. A wide range of industries, such as entertainment and media, military contracting, and grocery retail have already been profoundly affected. No enterprise, including yours, can afford to ignore the threat. Yet most companies are still not moving fast enough to meet this change. Some leaders are still in denial about it, some are reluctant to upend the status quo in their companies, and some are unaware of the necessary steps to take. But these excuses are not good enough.

Your shareholders (particularly activist shareholders), customers, and employees expect you to respond quickly. But panic and full-bore opportunism, in which you pursue every seeming source of revenue, will not work either. The answer is to develop a coherent strategy, seeking out the options that fit best with what you already do well. Here are 10 principles for accomplishing this, drawn from the experience of companies that have done so.

Why your COBOL code isn't going anywhere

Over time, applications become stale and clunky, and perhaps just stop working altogether. So it's amazing that, 60 years after the COBOL programming language first came on the scene, many COBOL applications are still with us. That's an incredible testament to the resilience of the language.

Global Crisis Survey 2019

Crisis Preparedness as the next competitive advantage: Learning from 4,500 crises
2,000 companies. 4,500 crises: Here’s all you need to know

We are pleased to present PwC’s first-ever Global Crisis Survey, the most comprehensive repository of corporate crisis data ever assembled. We heard from 2,084 senior executives in organisations of all sizes, in 25 industries, and across 43 countries — 1,430 of which had experienced at least one crisis in the past 5 years, for a total of 4,515 crises analysed overall. What we found out is game-changing.

By delving deep into the real-world experiences of organisations like yours, we uncovered some surprising findings, many of which turn the basic notion of crisis management – in fact, how we even think of crisis – on its head.

Instead of “admiring the problem,” we’ve used this data as a springboard to reverse-engineer a successful crisis response. We looked at the companies that self-identified as having emerged stronger from their worst crisis – and compared them to those who did not fare as well.

Making Indian businesses sustainable

Companies will accelerate their commitment to long-term social and environmental well-being only if India builds an ecosystem of sustainability drivers.

How Big Data is Leading to Big Change

From personalized healthcare to digital farming, and from energy management to digital governance solutions, Business 4.0 technologies have transformed lives across the world by creating customized solutions to tackle challenging social issues. And the organizations that have made a profound and sustainable impact on communities are those that have harnessed the power of big data.

At Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), we believe that the coming together of data and artificial intelligence will accelerate social transformation. Our digital publication pArIvartana explores all the ways in which this change will play out on the ground, highlighting the role of data and analytics for social transformation.

Published by the Analytics and Insights (A&I) unit at TCS, this book contains a compilation of articles and interviews with a diverse set of technology experts, industry leaders, CXOs, economists, academicians, researchers, social entrepreneurs and philanthropists, who have all made a sustainable impact on society. The contributors have not only shared their success stories, but also charted out their organizations’ vision to make the world a better place for generations to come.

Twenty things I wish I’d known when I started my PhD

Starting a PhD can be tough. Looking back, there are many things I wish I’d known at the beginning. Here, I have curated a list of advice from current PhD students and postdoctoral researchers from the Department of Zoology at my institution, the University of Oxford, UK, to aid new graduate students.

Three Dimensions of Design for Sustainable Behaviour

Designing products to be more sustainable is crucial if the UK is to meet the challenge of its ambitious new carbon reductions targets by 2050. How designers, manufacturers and service providers conceptualise behaviour is key to understanding how there will be widespread adoption of new products. The research area referred to as Design for Sustainable Behaviour has emerged to explore measures of reducing environmental impact through moderating the way people use products, services and systems. To date, though, characterisations of its strategies have been relatively one-dimensional, with an emphasis on environmental psychological approaches to understanding behaviour. This paper draws on a wider set of literature and academic disciplines to propose a conceptual framework that incorporates three dimensions: empowerment, information and motivation. This three-dimensional framework argues for a wider understanding of behaviour that encompasses feedback, participation and acknowledgement of the wider social and organisational context that behaviour is situated in. This framework is presented, the implications for theory and practice are explored, and a challenge is laid down to designers, academics and policymakers to consider how this framework can be applied, tested and further developed.

Toward a New Field of Global Engineering

The Engineer’s role in addressing global poverty challenges has often been confined to village and community-scale interventions, product design and development, or large-scale infrastructure design and construction. Yet despite fifty years of these approaches, over half the world’s population still lives on less than $5.50 a day, the global burden of disease in low-income countries is overwhelmingly attributable to environmental health contaminants, and climate change is already negatively affecting people in developing countries. The conventional community, product or infrastructure focuses of development engineering is insufficient to address these global drivers that perpetuate poverty. The emerging field of Global Engineering can work to identify and address these structural issues. Global Engineering should be concerned with the unequal and unjust distribution of access to basic services such as water, sanitation, energy, food, transportation and shelter, and place an emphasis on identifying the drivers, determinants and solutions favoring equitable access. Technology development and validation, data collection and impact evaluation can contribute to evidence-based influence on policies and practice. Global Engineering envisions a world in which everyone has safe water, sanitation, energy, food, shelter and infrastructure, and can live in health, dignity, and prosperity.

The Little Robot that Lived at the Library - Towards Data Science

Our team at Futurice designed and built a social robot to guide people to books at Helsinki’s new central library, Oodi. Opened in 2018, Oodi is the biggest of Helsinki’s 37 public libraries. It has 10,000 visitors a day, and an estimated 2 million visitors a year (compared to Finland’s 5.5 million population, that is a significant portion).

Oodi is big on automation and robotics. It has an automatic returns system: customers set their books on a conveyor belt, which brings the books to the basement, where they get sorted into boxes, which are picked up by a mobile MiR200 robot, which brings the books to the 3rd floor. At the 3rd floor, librarians place the books back on the shelves.

Women in tech: 20 stories of women doing big things with their tech skills

You might have noticed it's International Women's Day. In fact, the month of March is Women's History Month, and publications are busy putting together posts about myriad women's issues.

There's plenty to talk about, ranging from the amount of money women make and the positions they're hired for, to how they're educated, and the kind of health care they receive, even the way they're taxed for tampons. It's good to talk about serious issues affecting various segments of the population.

If all this rubs you the wrong way — sorry not sorry, but there's a lot about gender equality that's pretty messed up, including the idea that we can make good as a society one day or month a year. Is it positive to have a day about women to raise awareness about their achievements and struggles? Yes. Would it be better to treat people with equality the rest of the year? You bet.

Here's a roundup of some — not all — of our favorite profile pieces on women in tech who are knocking down stereotypes year-round.

How your company can win the war for tech talent by hiring nontraditional employees

IBM and other tech companies are seeking tech workers from outside the field to fill open jobs. Here's how your business can use their tactics to find untapped talent.

PwC’s Global Artificial Intelligence Study: Sizing the prize

  • Artificial intelligence (AI) can transform the productivity and GDP potential of the global economy. Strategic investment in different types of AI technology is needed to make that happen.
  • Labour productivity improvements will drive initial GDP gains as firms seek to "augment" the productivity of their labour force with AI technologies and to automate some tasks and roles.
  • Our research also shows that 45% of total economic gains by 2030 will come from product enhancements, stimulating consumer demand. This is because AI will drive greater product variety, with increased personalisation, attractiveness and affordability over time.
  • The greatest economic gains from AI will be in China (26% boost to GDP in 2030) and North America (14.5% boost), equivalent to a total of $10.7 trillion and accounting for almost 70% of the global economic impact.
