How To
Get the Most Out of Your Smartphone Battery
The
battery is the most important component in your smartphone, because if the
battery isn't working, nothing else can. With the right sort of care and
attention, you can make sure your battery stays charged for longer—and lasts
longer overall, as well.
There
is good news, which is the lithium-ion batteries inside today's phones are more
reliable, longer-lasting, and safer—well, mostly—than ever before. That said,
we've got some tips for keeping them healthy and happy.
12 Industries That Will Thrive Thanks To Millennials
Millennials
are one of the largest generations in history, and they're on the cusp of their
prime spending years. These are the industries that stand to benefit the most. In
this report, we dive into some of the industries — from frozen foods and fast
casual dining to micromobility and personal finance apps — that could massively
benefit from the rise of Generation Y.
It’s
Not Just Your Smart Speaker. How Amazon Is Coming For The $50T+ Commercial and
Residential Real Estate Industries
Amazon has its eyes on the residential and commercial real estate markets. We take a look at how the tech giant is expanding far beyond its e-commerce ambitions.
20
terrifying uses of artificial intelligence
Many
advances in artificial intelligence are innovative and extraordinary, but some
are downright creepy. Here are 20 of the eeriest ways people are using, or
could use, AI.
US to collect social media profiles from immigrants, asylum seekers,
and refugees
The Department of Homeland Security plans to expand
its social media profile collection program from US visa applicants to also
include data from immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. The DHS published a
notice on the federal registry describing its future data collection practice
this week. The agency plans to ask immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees to
provide usernames -- without passwords -- for 19 social networking sites:
How to
build a portfolio and get a job in UX?
This
post sums up what author used, what steps he took and what conclusions the author drew from
reverse-engineering of UX portfolios. It’s not comprehensive. The author assumes
that if you’re starting out, you will Google terms that you’re not familiar
with. The author is focusing on outlining a process and sharing tips and tricks
which he had learned along the way so that you have an access to what he needed
the most during his job changing process.
The
Post-Graduation Blues: 10 Tips for the Recent Computer Science Grad
The
post-graduation job search is one of the most difficult and frustrating things
I’ve encountered thus far in my career. How did I so greatly misunderstand what
my job search would look like? You can imagine my surprise when I began
chatting with others around me about their job-hunting experience, only to find
out I was not alone. Between local meetups, clubs, and organizations, I was
absolutely shocked to find how many individuals with a degree (or at least
decent development experience) were working in the service industry simply
because the job hunt had treated them just as mercilessly as it had me.
Though
we are taught how rewarding a career in Software Development would be, I feel
that we under-prepare our graduates for what the world of job-hunting is like
in this day and age. With a world around us changing so rapidly, I believe
equipping our students with an understanding of how to approach their job
search is just as important as knowing the technical skills.
Despite
what I experienced, I know for a fact that there is room for new graduates in
the world of Software Development. We simply lack the understanding of how to
break into this industry from our university education alone.
Three
years ago, I graduated having no idea what my future would look like, but today
I can confidently say that I am a professional software developer with a bright
future ahead of me. I write this article in hopes of comforting those whose job
search looked like mine, and to share the valuable pieces of advice I received
about the post-graduation job hunt. This information truly shaped my career for
the better and I hope you find these tips as helpful as I did.
A
CIO’s guide to engaging the board
Because
technology is a crucial part of business strategy, boards and CIOs may need to
elevate their engagement and collaboration with each other. How can CIOs lead and
guide the conversation about technology's impact on business trajectory?
Networking
Technology: Where It Is Now — And Where It’s Headed
As
corporate bandwidth requirements continue to surge exponentially with every
passing year, it becomes clear that bandwidth demands as well as the business
requirements of the modern digital workspace are setting the stage for the
implementation of new, advanced technologies. These technologies give rise to
fresh possibilities and further fuel the demand for adding intelligent systems
to our daily lives and greater reliance on tech support, both in the home and
workfronts. With software trends emerging regularly in the IT scene, digital
services and people are becoming further intertwined to characterize everything
that’s new the world of network technology this year. These recent advancements
are more than likely to disrupt existing operations and foster an era of
digitization and intelligence throughout the business sector. Let’s see what’s
getting hot now in networking technology — and how they will be sizzling by the
end of the year.
LinkedIn
Top Startups 2019: The 25 hottest Indian companies to work for now
With
the 2nd annual Top Startups ranking, we uncover the young companies commanding
professionals’ attention today: the ones that are growing massively, scrambling
industries, shifting talent flows around the world and, often, altering how we
work and live.
Our
editors and data scientists parsed billions of actions generated by LinkedIn’s
645 million members — and looked at four pillars in particular: employee
growth; jobseeker interest; member engagement with the company and its
employees; and how well these startups pulled talent from our flagship LinkedIn
Top Companies list. To be eligible, companies must be 7 years old or younger,
have at least 50 employees, be privately held and headquartered in India. (You
can learn more about our methodology at the bottom of this article.)
Why a 100-Year-Old Scientist Predicts AI Will Replace Humans
Last month saw the release of a thought-provoking
new book, beautifully written by a respected scientist who’s now 100 years old.
But what’s making headlines is its prediction that superintelligent AI will
ultimately replace human beings.
The cover of James Lovelock’s “Novacene: The Coming
Age of Hyperintelligence” promises that the book offers “a vision of a future
epoch in which humans and artificial intelligence together will help the Earth
survive.” But that’s only half the story. “Futurist predicts cyborgs will
replace humans on earth,” reads a headline at the Futurism website — and that
site’s not the only one’s startled by the book’s embrace of our coming AI
overlords.
It’s a jarring hypothesis, but it’s fun to watch
Lovelock build his case — while occasionally looking back at a very long life
that was fruitful and well-lived. But it also challenges readers to engage in
an ambitious thought exercise that forces us to consider how we think about
ourselves, the work that we do, our place in the cosmos, and the legacy that
we’re ultimately leaving behind for future generations.
The 40 geekiest desk toys for IT people you can get on Amazon (and
beyond)
Interesting useful list of items
We got inside New York City's first-ever Amazon fulfillment center,
where thousands of people work in a building large enough for 18 football
fields
It was Amazon's first major "fulfillment
center" in New York State, and it was specifically opened to serve one of Amazon's
largest delivery markets: the New York City metro region. The shipping warehouse, based in Staten
Island, is also one of Amazon's most futuristic - in addition to the thousands of
people working there, it has dozens of robots.
When the Public Feared That Library Books Could Spread Deadly
Diseases
On September 12, 1895, a Nebraskan named Jessie
Allan died of tuberculosis. Such deaths were a common occurrence at the turn of
the 20th century, but Allan’s case of “consumption” reportedly came from an
unusual source. She was a librarian at the Omaha Public Library, and thanks to
a common fear of the time, people worried that Allan’s terminal illness may
have come from a book.
“The death of Miss Jessie Allan is doubly sad
because of the excellent reputation which her work won for her and the pleasant
affection which all librarians who knew her had come to feel for her, and
because her death has given rise to a fresh discussion as to the possibility of
infection from contagious diseases through library books,” the Library Journal,
published by the American Librarians Association, wrote in October of 1895.
Allan’s death occurred during what is sometimes
called the “great book scare.” This scare, now mostly forgotten, was a frantic
panic during the late 19th and early 20th centuries that contaminated
books—particularly ones lent out from libraries—could spread deadly diseases.
The panic sprung from “the public understanding of the causes of diseases as
germs,” says Annika Mann, a professor at Arizona State University and author of
Reading Contagion: The Hazards of Reading in the Age of Print.
Librarians worried that Allan’s death, which became
a focal point of the scare, would dissuade people from borrowing books and lead
to a decline in support for public libraries.

International Conference on Urban Data Science. 20-21 Jan 2020 at IIT
Madras
Urban
areas continue to be the centers of human activities and remain the loci of
resource and service consumption, economic transactions, and innovation. In
fact, the projections in parts of the world point to rapid urban growth. Other
areas of the urbanized world are experiencing population decline, reduced
revenues, concentrated poverty, and higher demands for services. Whether growing
or shrinking, cities and metropolitan areas face challenges of infrastructure,
public health, transportation, public safety, and environmental sustainability,
to name but a few. To address some of these challenges, the cities of today are
increasingly leveraging advanced computing and communication technologies as
well as big data analytics under the umbrella of smart cities and urban
informatics. Extensive research is taking place in a wide range of relevant
research areas to address some of these emerging challenges. Smart City
initiative is of global importance especially undertaken by cities in US,
India, multiple EU countries, and UAE governments in recent times.
We
are pleased to announce the first international conference focused on urban
data science and smart cities. The conference aims to gather researchers,
practitioners, and subject matter experts from academia, industry, and city
administration to address a number of research themes arising out of building
future smart cities.
The
conference is naturally expected to be multi-disciplinary, drawing experts in
data science, social sciences, cloud and distributed computing, urban
sustainability, public policy, and software engineering. Participants are
expected to share new findings, discuss current and future urban challenges,
exchange ideas, discuss potential collaborative opportunities, and report
latest research efforts.
