Great Global Meetings: Navigating Cultural Differences

I once asked a Japanese colleague of mine how he thought a meeting went. He replied: “Ah, very good.” I was familiar enough with the Japanese culture to know that if someone says, “very good” it may not be. So I asked: “Toshi-san, how did it really go?” He taught me a valuable lesson: “In Japan, we sometimes say you have two ears, two eyes, and one mouth.” I realized that was a beautiful way for him to gently criticize me for speaking too much in the meeting. It’s also a very good piece of advice for anyone operating internationally: Use your eyes and ears to observe and listen, and keep that mouth under control.

Navigating cross-cultural differences can be hard enough when team members are face-to-face, but when most communications are through some kind of technology—email, phone, IM, video, or online conferencing—it becomes infinitely more complex. A project team, with members from different cultures and belief systems, will face real struggles every day as they make decisions, give feedback, resolve issues, and so on.

In this article, we discuss the importance of learning how cultural differences affect the ability of distributed teams to work effectively. We will offer practical tips for bridging those differences through thoughtfully-planned conversations.

Putting a Finger on Our Phone Obsession

Mobile touches: a study on how humans use technology.

We all know life hasn’t been the same since Apple launched the iPhone nearly ten years ago. That little screen is always nearby—in our pocket or backpack, on the nightstand or under the pillow—beckoning us.

Each of us feels the pull, and it’s hard to dimensionalize. How much are we really attached to our phones physically, cognitively…emotionally? As People Nerds, the dscout research team exists to understand that pull.

(Though this story os bit dated, interesting to know the study results)

Do Plants Have Something to Say?

Monica Gagliano says that she has received Yoda-like advice from trees and shrubbery. She recalls being rocked like a baby by the spirit of a fern. She has ridden on the back of an invisible bear conjured by an osha root. She once accidentally bent space and time while playing the ocarina, an ancient wind instrument, in a redwood forest. “Oryngham,” she says, means “thank you” in plant language. These interactions have taken place in dreams, visions, songs and telekinetic interactions, sometimes with the help of shamans or ayahuasca.

This has all gone on around the same time as Dr. Gagliano’s scientific research, which has broken boundaries in the field of plant behavior and signaling. Currently at the University of Sydney in Australia, she has published a number of studies that support the view that plants are, to some extent, intelligent. Her experiments suggest that they can learn behaviors and remember them. Her work also suggests that plants can “hear” running water and even produce clicking noises, perhaps to communicate.

40+ Corporations Working On Autonomous Vehicles

Beyond trendy names like Tesla and Alphabet chasing self-driving cars, a host of auto brands and other tech heavyweights are also investing in autonomous R&D.

16 inventions getting us off fossil fuels and into renewable energy

Much of the world's energy is sourced from fossil fuels. .. Several innovators and companies have developed inventions to help get the world off of non-renewable energy. For example, the HomeBiogas 2.0 turns food waste into gas, producing up to three hours of cooking gas.

The massive plastic-cleaning device invented by a 24-year-old is running into problems in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Take a look at its difficult journey.

More than 320 million metric tons of plastic are produced every year, with much of it accumulating in oceans. At age 16, Dutch innovator Boyan Slat set out to tackle the problem. Slat proposed an idea for a massive cleanup device that would collect plastic from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a trash-filled vortex that's more than twice the size of Texas. The cleanup tool was recently deployed in the Pacific Ocean, but began spilling the plastic it had collected. Slat said he's confident that the device will be successful, but some critics remain skeptical.

How a Bitter Divorce Battle on Earth Led to Claims of a Crime in Space

Summer Worden, a former Air Force intelligence officer living in Kansas, has been in the midst of a bitter separation and parenting dispute for much of the past year. So she was surprised when she noticed that her estranged spouse still seemed to know things about her spending. Had she bought a car? How could she afford that?

Ms. Worden put her intelligence background to work, asking her bank about the locations of computers that had recently accessed her bank account using her login credentials. The bank got back to her with an answer: One was a computer network registered to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Ms. Worden’s spouse, Anne McClain, was a decorated NASA astronaut on a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station. She was about to be part of NASA’s first all-female spacewalk. But the couple’s domestic troubles on Earth, it seemed, had extended into outer space.

Ms. McClain acknowledged that she had accessed the bank account from space, insisting through a lawyer that she was merely shepherding the couple’s still-intertwined finances. Ms. Worden felt differently. She filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission and her family lodged one with NASA’s Office of Inspector General, accusing Ms. McClain of identity theft and improper access to Ms. Worden’s private financial records.

Open-Source Software Has Changed The Way Software Is Developed. Here’s Where The $33B Industry Is Headed

When it comes to software development, the term “open-source” is almost synonymous.

And as the most collaborative method of software development, it has grown increasingly popular over the last two decades. In fact, the open-source services industry is set to exceed $17B in 2019, and expected to reach nearly $33B by 2022, according to CB Insights’ Market Sizing tool.

Among its many characteristics, open-source software is publicly accessible, which allows developers to exchange code & ideas in a transparent and collaborative fashion. It also enables flexibility for many businesses looking to solve a wide range of problems.

Today, over 30M developers contribute to community-based platforms like GitHub. And the broader market is estimated to be worth hundreds of billions based on recent big-ticket acquisitions like Red Hat (acquired by IBM for $34B) and GitHub (acquired by Microsoft for $7.5B) — as well as large public market valuations like those of MongoDB ($7.9B) and Elastic ($7.3B).

In this analysis, we discuss the various elements of open-source, including what the software is, who the major players are (as well as who they’re benefiting — hint: cloud providers), and what the future has in store.

Project Management Guide for Beginners

Your ultimate introduction to the fundamentals of project management, curated best practices, and resources for project management beginners, all in one place.

113 Design Guidelines for Homepage Usability

While many of these guidelines can apply to web design in general, they are especially critical to follow when designing your homepage, because the stakes are so high. Your homepage is often your first — and possibly your last — chance to attract and retain each customer, rather like the front page of a newspaper. One of the biggest values of a newspaper's front page is the priority given to top news items. All homepages would benefit from being treated like a front page of a major newspaper, with editors who determine the high-priority content and ensure continuity and style consistency.

Even small changes to homepages can have drastic effects. Consider the homepage for The New York Times. If you kept all design and writing exactly the same on this site but decided to show only local New York content on the homepage and link to all national and international news, it would inexorably alter the entire site. On closer examination, this change doesn't seem small at all.

While we encourage you to use these guidelines as a checklist when designing your homepage, recognize that they are written in an abbreviated manner here. You'll need to look at the individual site examples to see these guidelines used properly or, more often, overlooked. This is an extensively illustrated book, and it is only in the context of a visual example that you can fully appreciate the negative impact of ignoring these guidelines.

All said, these are just guidelines, not axioms. For all sites, there are surely exceptions. However, we've developed these guidelines from our combined 14 years of experience, running user tests on homepages and observing what makes them pass or fail user scrutiny. Although you can greatly improve the usability of your homepage by following these guidelines, you also need to involve your own users in the process through methods such as field studies and usability testing and incorporate iterative feedback into your development cycle. If you make a decision not to follow a guideline, do so based on customer information in the context of your homepage.

(Though this post is dated interesting)

UDS 2020: 1st International Conference on Urban Data Science. 20-21 Jan 2020 at IIT Madras

Urban areas continue to be the centers of human activities and remain the loci of resource and service consumption, economic transactions, and innovation. In fact, the projections in parts of the world point to rapid urban growth. Other areas of the urbanized world are experiencing population decline, reduced revenues, concentrated poverty, and higher demands for services. Whether growing or shrinking, cities and metropolitan areas face challenges of infrastructure, public health, transportation, public safety, and environmental sustainability, to name but a few. To address some of these challenges, the cities of today are increasingly leveraging advanced computing and communication technologies as well as big data analytics under the umbrella of smart cities and urban informatics. Extensive research is taking place in a wide range of relevant research areas to address some of these emerging challenges. Smart City initiative is of global importance especially undertaken by cities in US, India, multiple EU countries, and UAE governments in recent times.

We are pleased to announce the first international conference focused on urban data science and smart cities. The conference aims to gather researchers, practitioners, and subject matter experts from academia, industry, and city administration to address a number of research themes arising out of building future smart cities.

The conference is naturally expected to be multi-disciplinary, drawing experts in data science, social sciences, cloud and distributed computing, urban sustainability, public policy, and software engineering. Participants are expected to share new findings, discuss current and future urban challenges, exchange ideas, discuss potential collaborative opportunities, and report latest research efforts.
