Top 20 Computer Engineering Projects

Computer engineering is a discipline that integrates several fields of electrical engineering and computer science required to develop computer hardware and software. It’s all the rage with the industry today. For students and hobbyists, we picked out some computer engineering projects from all over the internet. These are simple and interesting while providing a solution that could come in handy in real life scenarios.

Advice for those CSE students who learned nothing in college, but now wish to work at Google

The 4 years of college are the best time to explore and learn new things, the reason being that you do not have any responsibilities and so, you can put your heart and soul into learning. However, given that you have already wasted the college years, you should effectively “re-live” them.

10 ways to have better conversations

Many leaders take a vested interest in improving their communication skills. They labor over email drafts to ensure the most important updates are explained. They fine-tune and practice their presentations repeatedly before they take the stage at business events. They might even coach their teams on communication best practices and etiquette.

But what about the side conversations that happen in the hallways at work or on the road with customers? Do you treat them with the same level of preparation and care? Often not. In those situations, most of us simply wing it.

Getting better at day-to-day, informal conversations can improve your overall communication skills, and leaders can practice every single day. Keep these 10 rules in mind for more professional and productive conversations.

AI In Automotives: The Future is Now!

Flying cars are no longer a fantasy or science fiction! With AI, autonomous, or self-driving, cars and autonomous flying cars are no more a futuristic dream. Companies like Boeing and Terrafugia have already developed fully-autonomous flying cars. With the emergence of AI, we can see many transformations in automotive and aviation industries. Although autonomous flying cars are not yet available in the market, self-driving cars are ready for commercial sale. Now, imagine our world with self-driving vehicles including cars, taxis, trucks, buses and bikes rolling out on highways, on the streets and on rural roads. This could become a reality with AI a few years from now.

Riding a self-driving car with much anticipation would be an exciting and thrilling experience for most of us. Everything in a driverless or self-driving car would seem magical when the steering wheel turns by itself, or the car automatically stops at a traffic light. This article will delve into AI trends driving the automotive industry, including self-driving cars and driver-assistance technologies.

50 Women-Led Startups That Are Crushing Tech

Every year we talk about how this will be the Year of the Woman because of the incredible advances women are making. There's no doubt that 2019 will go down in history as the first time we saw a record number of diverse women serving in the US Congress and announcing their candidacy for President of the United States. But you know what isn't budging for the 12.3 million women US entrepreneurs who founded companies? Access to capital.

For a second year in a row, only 2.2% of investor funding went to women-led startups. #NotAcceptable. Despite all of the media coverage and all of the commitments by investors to diversify their portfolios, many continue to miss or ignore opportunities to invest in the next billion dollar startups that happen to be led by women. In our tech-driven economy, we’re still tackling incredible obstacles that could be resolved by backing the right creative and innovative minds. This continues to be the driving force behind our Women Startup Challenges: to disrupt a culture and economy that's made it exceedingly difficult for women founders to access capital.

“The tech world needs the perspective of more women founders if we’re going to tackle some of the biggest challenges impacting us,” said Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist and Craig Newmark Philanthropies. “This means that a lot more than 2.2% of investor money needs to go to women-led startups, and we have an opportunity and an obligation to start setting the record straight, considering how studies show that tech companies led by women have a 35% ROI.”

Newmark is right, we do need to set the record straight. From ‘Food Systems’ to the ‘Future of Family,’ here are 50 women-led startups who are pushing the frontiers of innovation.

Govt seeks feedback on draft e-comm guidelines for consumer protection

The proposed rules are aimed at curbing the sale of counterfeit goods, streamlining returns and refunds, and delineating the liabilities of sellers and online marketplaces.

The government is seeking feedback on draft guidelines that seek to protect consumers who shop online. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs introduced the draft e-commerce guidelines for consumer protection in a notification on Friday.

What Makes a Great Logo

With the unveiling of the new Slack logo which has caught a lot of buzz, I decided to expound on some of the qualities of a great logo that nobody talks about. Let me preface this by saying this isn’t another article about logo design. While any of these ‘rules’ can potentially be broken, they do offer insight into what is a very important part of a business—the commissioning and selection of the visual stimuli that represent it. One of the reasons it is so important is because a logo or brand ‘pivot’ can cost a considerable amount of time and money, especially with companies who deal physical products. For these reasons, it’s best to try and get it right the first time. Once you commit to a logo and brand, you’ve committed to the business.

First, let’s go over the basic logo truths. The general consensus among designers is that logos should be unique, scalable, simple, and work well in monochrome. This is all sound practice, and this article does not argue against any of these mantras. That being said, there is more to gauge quality than these common prerequisites.

With the growing use of tools like 99designs and sites like Upwork—finding awesome logo work is actually quite difficult in the age of the internet. Huge corporations and even medium-sized businesses are difficult to penetrate for an agency, and startups often want to stay lean and outsource their work. Also, due to the digitization of design, we often see less creative forms because graphics rendering programs afford linear forms such as squares, triangles, and simple ovals. In other words, illustrative uniqueness isn’t as popular now because paper and pen (hand, not mouse) skills are actually declining per capita.

Return to the moon? 3D printing with moondust could be the key to future lunar living

The entire Apollo 11 mission to the moon took just eight days. If we ever want to build permanent bases on the moon, or perhaps even Mars or beyond, then future astronauts will have to spend many more days, months and maybe even years in space without a constant lifeline to Earth. The question is how would they get hold of everything they needed. Using rockets to send all the equipment and supplies for building and maintaining long-term settlements on the moon would be hugely expensive.

This is where 3D printing could come in, allowing astronauts to construct whatever their lunar colony needed from raw materials. Much of the excitement around 3D printing in space has focused on using it to construct buildings from lunar rock. But my research suggests it may actually be more practical to use this moondust to supply lunar manufacturing labs turning out replacement components for all sorts of equipment.

Cardiac Surveillance: The Pentagon can now track your unique heartbeat - Inevitable/Human

Did you know that your heart is one-of-a-kind? Not metaphorically, speaking. Literally, your heartbeat (cardiac signature) is as unique to you as your fingerprint. While cardiac signatures are most commonly used to detect fatal heart conditions (the Apple Watch’s EKG monitor is already saving people’s lives), your heartbeat will soon be used to identify who you are.

And just like the research in all other areas of biometrics (fingerprints, irises, palm prints, faces, gait, DNA, typing rhythm, and voice), cardiac signatures will fall into the identification purgatory of security and surveillance:

China has started a grand experiment in AI education. It could reshape how the world learns

In recent years, the country has rushed to pursue “intelligent education.” Now its billion-dollar ed-tech companies are planning to export their vision overseas.

A solar-powered system can turn salt water into fresh drinking water for 25,000 people per day. It could help address the world's looming water crisis.

People have been trying to turn seawater into drinking water  for thousands of years, but the process is not usually energy-efficient or affordable.

At a newly constructed facility in Kenya, however, a nonprofit called GivePower is tackling that challenge using solar power.

The desalination system, which started operating in the coastal area of Kiunga in July 2018, can create 19,800 gallons (75,000 liters) of fresh drinking water water each day - enough for 25,000 people.

How digital innovation is transforming Indian agriculture

In agriculture, India is a land of contradictions. The country produces 11 percent of total global agriculture and, at the same time, is host to the world’s largest number of malnourished people. Agriculture provides livelihoods for about half of the Indian population, most of whom are smallholder farmers, yet a majority of government agricultural subsidies are used by medium- and large-scale farmers. Parallel to India’s tremendous successes in the modernization of agriculture, smallholder farmers have been marginalized. The average debt of a farming household has risen fivefold in a decade, while increases in farm incomes have not kept up, and more than 300,000 Indian farmers have committed suicide since 1995.

Given the complexity of Indian agriculture, no single policy change or technology shift will move the country toward its dual goals of raising income for smallholder farmers and continuing to strengthen the competitiveness of Indian agriculture, but the digital transformation of agriculture occurring worldwide holds some promise for progress. This article presents reflections on the topic from four leaders in Indian agriculture. They offer insights illustrating fundamental changes in the structure of the sector and raise questions about whether smallholder farmers will benefit from digital innovation in the same way that larger farmers will.

Ashok Dalwai, who has chaired the Committee on Doubling Farmers’ Income and is CEO of the National Rainfed Area Authority for the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, describes India’s move toward an “income revolution” in the agriculture sector. Purvi Mehta, head of agriculture for Asia at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, explains how digital innovations are supporting moves toward higher incomes for smallholder farmers. Rohtash Mal, chairman of EM3 AgriServices, elaborates on challenges and questions about how these innovations will be monetized to have an impact on smallholders. Anil Jain, managing director of Jain Irrigation, discusses the need to pair digital innovation with physical infrastructure.

We spoke to these leaders as participants in a panel at the World Food Prize event in 2018, “Transforming Indian agriculture through digital innovation.”

What Psychiatrists Think About Artificial Intelligence

About 50% of psychiatrists in a recent survey believe that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning will significantly transform the way they work, but only 4% think that future autonomous technology will replace them. Sermo, a global networking platform open to licensed physicians, conducted the survey in partnership with psychiatry and health technology researchers at Duke University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School.

The billion-dollar race to invent a wearable air conditioner

Extreme heat around the world is pushing companies—and researchers—to find new ways to cool down the human body.
