Application-Design Mistakes
Designing
complex applications is a challenging undertaking. Building applications that
have both the depth to support complicated tasks and the intuitiveness to make
it clear how to get that work done is a tremendous challenge. Making general
recommendations about common application-design problems is difficult, because
so many of the problems we observe are domain-specific. Despite the
domain-specific nature of most app usability problems, here are 10 common
mistakes that we frequently see across industries.

Free Book:
Sustainable Energy-- without hot air
According
to Bill gates, this book is “Clear Thinking on the Topic of Energy”. 'If someone wants an overall view of how
energy gets used, where it comes from, and the challenges in switching to new
sources, this is the book to read. ... I was thrilled to see a book that is
scientific, numeric, broad, open-minded, and well written on a topic where a
lot of narrow, obscure, non-numeric writing confuses the public. People need to
really understand what is going on and then be part of the process of moving
the world to a new energy infrastructure.'
All
exhibits at the Summer Science Exhibition of Royal Society
With
more than 22 exhibits exploring the very latest advances in science, and access
to hundreds of scientists, the Summer Science Exhibition offers a unique
opportunity to explore the science shaping our future with the people making it
happen.
- Would you trust a driverless car? Find out how the very latest advances in sensors and artificial intelligence promise to make autonomous cars safer than human drivers.
- What would you say to an alien? Look out to the Universe with the latest hi-tech instruments enabling the search for advanced civilisations in outer space to reach further than ever before. Plus you can join the debate on what, if anything, we should say to them.
- What would it be like to live on the moon? 50 years after the Apollo 11 Moon landings, come and ask our space scientists how advances in British science are taking humanity one step closer to living on this lunar landscape.
- What colour is the sound of rain? Hear from the people living with synaesthesia, a condition that blurs the senses. Find out if you are in the 1.5% of the population thought to have mirror-sensory synaesthesia, which causes individuals struggle to differentiate between their own bodily feelings and other people's.
- What's the quietest place in the Universe? Surprisingly it sits next to the M6 motorway… Discover how the use of this state-of-the-art ‘isolation’ laboratory is helping scientists to develop brand new materials and technology in a space that is completely free of ‘noise’.

Alcohol causes significant harm to those other than the drinker
The effects of heavy drinking extend beyond those
who use alcohol, a new study reports. Each year, one in five American adults
are harmed as a result of someone else’s drinking. People report threats of
harassment, vandalism, physical aggression, financial and family problems, and
harm from DUIs as main problems associated with other people’s drinking.
Researchers say the type of harm experienced differ by gender, with women more
likely to report financial or family problems, and men reporting physical
aggression and vandalism more often. Women are more likely to experience harm
as a result of a family member’s drinking, while men are more likely to be
harmed as a result of alcohol use by a person outside the family. Even those
who don’t drink heavily are at three times higher risk of antisocial behaviors.
Each year, one in five U.S. adults — an estimated 53
million people — experience harm because of someone else’s drinking, according
to new research in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.

Tips
and Techniques for More Confident and Compelling Presentations
The
ability to present your ideas in a clear, confident, and authentic manner can
make a huge difference in your business (and personal) success. Yet many people
are anxious or under-practiced in presenting effectively. The best way to feel
more confident and deliver engaging presentations is through smart and thorough
preparation and practice. From first planning through actual delivery, these
tips and techniques can help you be a more compelling speaker and ensure your
audience gets your message.
Boeing’s
737 Max Software Outsourced to $9-an-Hour Engineers
It
remains the mystery at the heart of Boeing Co.’s 737 Max crisis: how a company
renowned for meticulous design made seemingly basic software mistakes leading
to a pair of deadly crashes. Longtime Boeing engineers say the effort was
complicated by a push to outsource work to lower-paid contractors.
The
Max software -- plagued by issues that could keep the planes grounded months
longer after U.S. regulators this week revealed a new flaw -- was developed at
a time Boeing was laying off experienced engineers and pressing suppliers to
cut costs.
Increasingly,
the iconic American planemaker and its subcontractors have relied on temporary
workers making as little as $9 an hour to develop and test software, often from
countries lacking a deep background in aerospace -- notably India.
Inexperienced
programmers from India could be behind some of the software problems plaguing
Boeing’s 737 MAX aircraft, Bloomberg reports, citing multiple sources. Some of
the plane’s software was reportedly built by HCL Tech and Cyient engineers (for
₹620 an hour)
with no aviation experience. Boeing employees say the outsourced effort
required multiple back-and-forths and the final software, although designed to
Boeing specifications, was “far
less-efficient.” But HCL and Cyient did not work on the
Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System linked to the Lion Air and the
Ethiopian Airlines crashes, Boeing said.
Wearable
Computing
Wearable
computing is the study or practice of inventing, designing, building, or using
miniature body-borne computational and sensory devices. Wearable computers may
be worn under, over, or in clothing, or may also be themselves clothes
SpaceX
is about to launch 152 dead people's remains into orbit aboard a Falcon Heavy
rocket
On
June 24, SpaceX plans to launch its third Falcon Heavy rocket - the world's
most powerful operational launch system - and send 24 different satellites into
orbit. One of the satellites will carry 152 metal capsules packed with human
ashes. A company called Celestis arranged the "funeral flight" and
charges upwards of $5,000 to fly 1 gram of "participant" cremains
into orbit. Celestis has arranged the launch of cremains from engineers,
astronauts, authors, and a even Star Trek actor.
As
countries battle for control of North Pole, science is the ultimate winner
A
competition for the North Pole heated up last month, as Canada became the third
country to claim—based on extensive scientific data—that it should have
sovereignty over a large swath of the Arctic Ocean, including the pole.
Canada's bid, submitted to the United Nations's Commission on the Limits of the
Continental Shelf (CLCS) on 23 May, joins competing claims from Russia and
Denmark. Like theirs, it is motivated by the prospect of mineral riches: the
large oil reserves believed to lie under the Arctic Ocean, which will become more
accessible as the polar ice retreats. And all three claims, along with dozens
of similar claims in other oceans, rest on extensive seafloor mapping, which
has proved to be a boon to science, whatever the outcome for individual
countries. The race to obtain control over parts of the sea floor has
"dramatically changed our understanding of the oceans," says marine
geophysicist Larry Mayer of the University of New Hampshire in Durham.
She can STEM and be a keynote speaker too!
I was looking at an advertisement for a conference
on higher education in India where all Vice-chancellors and heads of
institutions were invited as speakers. It was shocking to see no woman speakers
among all the VCs and Deans that were invited. It kept me wondering whether
there are negligible women at the top of higher institutions or the conference
organizer did not make any attempt to invite at least some women as speakers.
The group was convening to discuss the future of education in India and had no
woman included in the dialogue- how do we guarantee that the group will discuss
policies which impact girls’ education? How can a group come to a logical
decision and decide the future for students in the country including girls
without having any voice from 50% of the population? There were several glaring
questions that came to my mind: In our country most of the educators at the
school level are women. Then why are women poorly represented at higher
education level? We have several women school principals but how many VCs and
Deans of universities and colleges are women? Are women not taking the real
tough jobs or there are very few women highly qualified and even fewer opting
for the top job?
From Retailers To Insurance Providers, Here Are 20 Corps Using Drone
Tech Today
From logistics to entertainment to insurance, drones
are helping corporates cut costs, save time, and improve safety.
From the fearsome MQ-9 Reapers used by the US
military to the nimble delivery octocopters Amazon is looking to deploy,
organizations across a wide range of industries are finding uses for unmanned
aerial vehicles (UAVs) — also known as drones.
For example, small, lightweight drones are helping
engineers on industrial sites conduct safety inspections in spaces that would
be too small or dangerous for a human to navigate.
They also have the potential to bring internet
connectivity to remote areas, which was the goal of Facebook’s Aquila project.
Drones are even being used for entertainment. During
the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics, Intel put on an air show
featuring a synchronized flight of 1000+ drones.
Below, we look at 20 corporations leveraging drone
technology to spur innovation, cut costs, boost efficiency, and sometimes even
help save lives.
