Digital ID: A key to inclusive growth

Digital identificatiion, or “digital ID,” can be authenticated unambiguously through a digital channel, unlocking access to banking, government benefits, education, and many other critical services. The risks and potential for misuse of digital ID are real and deserve careful attention. When well-designed, digital ID not only enables civic and social empowerment, but also makes possible real and inclusive economic gains—a less well understood aspect of the technology. In this research, we develop a framework to understand the potential economic impact of digital ID, informed by an analysis of nearly 100 ways in which digital ID can be used in Brazil, China, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

The Concept Paper for a New Product: The Kickstart of a LPPD Project

Lean product and process development is not an easy undertaking, neither to understand nor execute. The concepts, tools and practices are often found to be technical, complex and counterintuitive, making it a challenge to launch new initiatives.

Luckily, there is a tool that can help remedy this ever-common problem: the Concept Paper.

The ever-changing store: An agile approach to redesigning retail formats

The role of the store has changed. With customers increasingly shifting their spending online, it’s not enough for a brick-and-mortar store to be just a transactional venue. Instead, it now must serve as a brand-building environment in which customers can have special, in-person experiences that can’t be replicated in digital channels. To keep their stores relevant, retailers need to make the most of physical stores’ built-in sensory advantages over e-commerce—they need to tout the experience of touching, smelling, and trying on products, and they must ensure that the in-store experience is enjoyable and convenient. Otherwise, customers simply won’t bother making the trip.

Atlas Obscura readers share their most unforgettable encounters with strangers on airplanes.

How an Ancient Indian Art Utilizes Mathematics, Mythology, and Rice

Computer scientists have studied these “pictorial prayers.”

Mathematicians and computer scientists have keenly studied the kōlam. The kōlam is an unusual example of the expression of mathematical ideas in a cultural setting, writes Marcia Ascher, a professor emerita of Mathematics at Ithaca College. Citing her ethnomathematical research (a field of study combining anthropology and mathematics), Nagarajan adds that “The kōlam is one of the few embedded indigenous traditions that have contributed to the western mathematical tradition.”

14 Corporate Innovation Lab Products That Changed The World

Today, it seems like every large corporation has its own “innovation lab.” Designed to be nimble, startup-like working environments inside big corporations, these labs have produced some successes. They have also, like startups, produced a lot of failures. Few are more critical of the model than startup entrepreneurs and VCs, who argue that corporate innovation labs are mostly innovation theater.

Leading your organization to responsible AI
While artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly becoming a new tool in the CEO tool belt to drive revenues and profitability, it has also become clear that deploying AI requires careful management to prevent unintentional but significant damage, not only to brand reputation but, more important, to workers, individuals, and society as a whole.

Planning For Servitization Success

This report provides a perspective on servitization opportunities and steps manufacturers can take to overcome the associated challenges.

Book: Women Know Cyber: 100 Fascinating Females Fighting Cybercrime

Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that women will hold approximately 20 percent of the positions in our field by the end of this year. But, that is up from an 11 percent figure which has been circulating for the past 6 years. Make no mistake about it — women are trending up in cybersecurity.

How do we move the needle from 20 percent to 50 percent in the coming years? One answer may be that we need to look at the glass as being half-full, rather than half-empty — as has been the case for way too long by way too many people. Let’s highlight the sheer number of women in cybersecurity — in an effort to attract more women to an industry that desperately needs them.

The book “Women Know Cyber” features cybersecurity experts from across the globe, with varying backgrounds, who stand out for protecting governments, businesses, and people from cybercrime — and for their contributions to our community.

The secret’s in: how technology is making public interest disclosures even harder

Intelligence agencies now have a powerful surveillance technology to track down confidential sources, and can do so much more easily than ever before and it deters sources and whistleblowers. The “chilling effect” of such surveillance technology means that government is less likely subject to effective scrutiny by the fourth estate. The massive expansion of the surveillance state needs to be reeled back in if the public interest is to be properly served.

Will builders be replaced by robots? More than 7,000 Robots Will Work in Construction by 2025

Use of robots in construction will rapidly expand in the coming years with increasing speed, efficiency, safety, and profits, a new report claims. The industry is 'ripe for disruption' after relying on manual labour for so long, according to AI consulting firm Tractica. It cited the recent adoption of robotic technology by a number of companies as the beginning of a growth curve. Projections place the value of the construction robotics industry in the region of $226 million (£173m) by 2025, a 10 fold increase compared to 2018. Wile the majority of demand is likely to come from construction sites such as demolition, a number of more specialised functions such as 3D printing, also face mass automation.

Drones surveying area around Chernobyl provide the most detailed look yet at fallout from the 1986 disaster

One of the most radioactive places on Earth has been mapped in unprecedented detail, thanks to a team of British scientists equipped with the latest in drone technology. Chernobyl's Red Forest remains highly irradiated 33 years on from the catastrophic accident at the number-4 nuclear reactor. Experts led by the UK’s National Centre for Nuclear Robotics and the University of Bristol used drones fitted with custom-built radiation detectors to create 3D maps of the area, some of which lies just 1,600ft (500m) from the power plant. Their efforts revealed previously undetected radiation 'hotspots', where radioactive material from the fallout has gathered over the years.
