Internet Society 2019 Global Internet Report

Consolidation in the Internet Economy. How will consolidation impact the Internet’s technical evolution and use?

In the 2019 report, the Internet Society asks whether the Internet economy is consolidating and, if it is, what the implications might be. From the dominance of Facebook in social messaging, Google in search and Amazon in online shopping, the largest Internet platforms are capturing fundamental human interactions. This dominance, and the finances and reach that accompany it, enable the platforms to extend their influence and reach into new market spaces, from autonomous vehicles, to AI, to cloud services and beyond. This leverage is built on unprecedented network effects, vast troves of user data, business agility, and regulatory freedom that few other companies enjoy.

5G Radiation Dangers – 11 Reasons To Be Concerned

Like it or not we’re rapidly moving into the world of 5G, or 5th generation cellular telecommunications. Why? Because the frequency bandwidths used currently by cell phones and similar technologies are becoming saturated. And also because we live in a world where people want more. 5G, and the Internet of Things (IoT) that goes with it, promises to give us more. But more what?

The USA is currently leading the way on 5G. At the June 2016 press conference where the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) head Tom Wheeler announced the opening up of low, mid and high spectrum’s. There was no mention of health effects whatsoever. But the dangers are real.

Geolocation Forensics

Everything in this article addresses methods and techniques to place a person (or a device) at an exact physical location, anywhere on the planet. Varying methods have varying degrees of accuracy and varying degrees of reliability. When there is only one source of geolocation data, the reliability may not be as accurate or reliable when there are several sources of corroborating data sources. With that, how close can we get in narrowing down a person or device to a specific physical location?

20 Best Motivational Books to Take Charge of Your Life

Motivation. When you have it, anything seems achievable. When it is lacking, it can sometimes be tough to get out of bed.

Like anything, books can be motivational. In fact, books and movies may be two of the most motivational mediums around.

When you read a good book, you want to go out and conquer the world. The book motivates you to succeed, and if it is a good motivational book, it also hands you tools to help you succeed. That is what make a great motivational book.

And that is what this list is all about. It is a list of the best motivational books to help you take change of your life.

These books are all nonfiction. Fiction books may be motivational, but they often are short on details for achieving transformational life changes.

The Third Law: The future of computing is analog

The history of computing can be divided into an Old Testament and a New Testament: before and after electronic digital computers and the codes they spawned proliferated across the earth. The Old Testament prophets, who delivered the underlying logic, included Thomas Hobbes and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. The New Testament prophets included Alan Turing, John von Neumann, Claude Shannon, and Norbert Wiener. They delivered the machines.

The next revolution in computing will be signaled by the rise of analog systems over which digital programming no longer has control.

China’s Tech Firms Are Mapping Pig Faces

As a devastating disease afflicts the country’s swine, companies are scrambling to roll out facial and voice recognition and other unproven ways to save them.

We Asked 105 Experts What Scares and Inspires Them Most About the Future

The future is wonderful, the future is terrifying. That’s our motto at Motherboard.

Envisioning the future defined by our wildest ambitions or our deepest fears is an instinct as old as human culture. But it has taken on new urgency in recent years, as people grapple with profound paradigm shifts worldwide. We are living in the most socially interconnected and technologically advanced society in history. We are discovering far-flung alien exoplanets, designing algorithms that mimic how we think, and becoming fluent in the genetic language of life. What could go wrong? What could go right?

To shed light on those questions, Motherboard asked 105 interdisciplinary thinkers about their fears and hopes about the future. We defined “thinkers” and “smart people” as experts in fields we regularly cover. Participants include (but are not limited to) 19 space scientists, 19 biologists and environmental scientists, 11 computer scientists, eight medical scientists, five lawyers, four historians, a musicologist, a paleontologist, an astronaut, and a digital artist who replied with emojis.

Most of the participants are based in the United States (69), but we also received responses from experts in Europe (20), Australia (5), Canada (4), Singapore (2), South Africa (2), Taiwan (1), India (1), and Bangladesh (1). We talked to 56 women and 49 men.

All 105 participants fielded these twin questions: What worries you most about the future? What gives you the most hope about the future? Their responses, listed below, are edited for brevity and arranged by field of expertise. If you’d like to read only the fears and worries, grouped by common themes, click here. If you’d like to read only the hopes by theme, click here.

You Do Not Need Blockchain: Eight Popular Use Cases And Why They Do Not Work

People are resorting to blockchain for all kinds of reasons these days. Ever since I started doing smart contract security audits in mid-2017, I’ve seen it all. A special category of cases is ‘blockchain use’ that seems logical and beneficial, but actually contains a problem that then spreads from one startup to another. I am going to give some examples of such problems and ineffective solutions so that you (developer/customer/investor) know what to do when somebody offers you to use blockchain this way.

Data Fellows Programme in The Hague, the Netherlands

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has a Centre for Humanitarian Data in The Hague, the Netherlands to help increase the use and impact of data in the humanitarian sector. The vision is to create a future where all people involved in a humanitarian emergency have access to the data they need, when and how they need it, to make responsible and informed decisions.

The Centre will soon host its second class of Fellows in The Hague in June and July 2019. Through this programme, Fellows will come together to design and deliver targeted projects that contribute to the overall goals of the Centre. The 2019 Fellows will focus on four areas where the Centre is seeking new perspectives, insights and partnerships including: Business Strategy, Data Science (education data), Predictive Analytics, and Statistics (disability data). The Fellowship programme is residential, with Fellows living and working in The Hague under the direction of the Coordinator for the Data Fellows Programme.

Support for the second class of Fellows is being provided as part of the OCHA partnership with, inter alia, Education Above All Foundation that works to improve access to quality education for vulnerable and marginalized people in the developing world.

CDAC: Hands-On Courses On Data Science

We are living in a Data Age. Data is being continuously generated and consumed in various formats, and sizes from a number of varied sources. This data can be a big asset if stored, processed and analysed efficiently in real time with the help of intelligent algorithms. There is a growing interest to utilize such data for the improvement of business, health, education, society, etc.

There are many ways to process and analyse such data spanning techniques like data visualisation, text analysis, predictions and recommendations etc. Applications of these techniques can give companies and organisations valuable insights leading to competitive advantage, efficient service delivery and above all customer satisfaction. And so the demand for skilled resources in these fields is growing day by day.

With this view, CDAC, Mumbai is announcing three short-term courses in Data Science and Machine Learning.
