Dozen Times Artificial Intelligence Startled The World
Generative
Adversarial Networks (GANs) are some of the most fascinating ways to “teach”
computers to do human tasks. We’ve always heard that competition can boost
performance, but now GANs are taking “learning from Competition” to an
industrial scale. Generative Adversarial Networks are defined by AI entities
(Neural Networks) that compete with each other to get better at their
respective tasks. This post highlights some of the coolest GAN applications in
action.

38 Ways Drones Will Impact Society: From Fighting War To Forecasting
Weather, UAVs Change Everything
UAVs
are tackling everything from disease control to vacuuming up ocean waste to
delivering pizza, and more.
Drone
technology has been used by defense organizations and tech-savvy consumers for
quite some time. However, the benefits of this technology extends well beyond
just these sectors.
With
the rising accessibility of drones, many of the most dangerous and high-paying
jobs within the commercial sector are ripe for displacement by drone
technology. The use cases for safe, cost-effective solutions range from data
collection to delivery. And as autonomy and collision-avoidance technologies
improve, so too will drones’ ability to perform increasingly complex tasks.
According
to forecasts, the emerging global market for business services using drones is
valued at over $127B. As more companies look to capitalize on these commercial
opportunities, investment into the drone space continues to grow.
A
drone or a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) typically refers to a pilotless
aircraft that operates through a combination of technologies, including
computer vision, artificial intelligence, object avoidance tech, and others.
But drones can also be ground or sea vehicles that operate autonomously.
Below,
check out the ways companies are harnessing drone technology for commercial
purposes across industries.
The Future Of Data Centers
With over 175 zettabytes of data expected by 2025,
data centers will continue to play a vital role in the ingestion, computation,
storage, and management of information.
Often hidden in plain sight, data centers are the
backbone of our internet. They store, communicate, and transport the
information we produce every single day. The more data we create, the more
vital our data centers become.
But many of today’s data centers are clunky,
inefficient, and outdated. To keep them running, data center operators, from
FAMGA to colocation providers, are working on upgrading them to fit our
ever-changing world.
In this report, we take a deep dive into the many
aspects of data centers and how they’re evolving, from where and how they’re
built, to the energy they’re using, to the hardware that operates inside them.
The race to save the river Ganges
India's holy Ganges begins as a crystal clear river
high in the icy Himalayas but pollution and excessive usage transforms it into
toxic sludge in places on its journey through burgeoning cities, industrial
hubs and past millions of devotees.
The country’s government, led by Narendra Modi and
his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party that reveres the river, committed
nearly $3 billion of funds to a five-year clean-up of the Ganges, due to be
completed in 2020.
In Uttar Pradesh state, the city of Prayagraj is
currently hosting a huge religious festival called the Kumbh Mela, where up to
150 million pilgrims will come to bathe in the Ganges by March. The state
government has undertaken emergency measures to ensure the water runs clear
there, temporarily closing sewage drains and ordering heavily polluting
tanneries upstream to be shut for a three-month period during the festival.
India’s Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari said
last month the plans to clean the river are on track. Modi too has made the
issue a top priority, telling Reuters partner ANI in an interview last month
the government was “working hard” on improving water quality.
But problems still remain. The BJP’s efforts have
been hampered by failure to put plans into effect, meaning much of the money
has gone unspent. Reuters found last year that only a tenth of the funds had
been used in the first two years of the project, with officials struggling to
find land for new treatment plants.
In November, the United Nations said that the Ganges
is still “woefully polluted and efforts to clean it severely lacking”. In a
report it said that despite court orders urging state governments along the
river to ensure no untreated sewage is dumped in the Ganges, the practice is
still widespread. The UN estimates that as much as 80 percent of sewage
discharged into two major tributaries that feed the river is still untreated.
Zettascale
by 2035? China Thinks So
Exascale
machines (of at least a 1 exaflops peak) are anticipated to arrive by around
2020, a few years behind original predictions; and given extreme-scale
performance challenges are not getting any easier, it makes sense that
researchers are already looking ahead to the next big 1,000x performance goal
post: zettascale computing. In a recently published paper, a team from the
National University of Defense Technology in China, responsible for the Tianhe
series of supercomputers, suggests that it will be possible to build a
zettascale machine by 2035. The paper outlines six major challenges with
respect to hardware and software, concluding with recommendations to support
zettascale computing.

Bonus: How to stay fit forever: 25 tips to keep moving when life
gets in the way
hen it comes to exercise, we think about how to
“get” fit. But often, starting out is not the problem. “The big problem is
maintaining it,” says Falko Sniehotta, a professor of behavioural medicine and
health psychology at Newcastle University. The official UK guidelines say
adults should do strength exercises, as well as 150 minutes of moderate
activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, every week. According to the
Health Survey for England in 2016, 34% of men and 42% of women are not hitting
the aerobic exercise targets, and even more – 69% and 77% respectively – are
not doing enough strengthening activity. A report from the World Health
Organization last week found that people in the UK were among the least active
in the world, with 32% of men and 40% of women reporting inactivity. Meanwhile,
obesity is adding to the chronic long-term diseases cited in Public Health
England’s analysis, which shows women in the UK are dying earlier than in most
EU countries.
We all know we should be doing more, but how do we
keep moving when our motivation slips, the weather takes a turn for the worse
or life gets in the way? Try these 25 pieces of advice from experts and
Guardian readers to keep you going.
