Indian engineers develop ‘Light’ which could make you stop using Google search

Tall claims are everywhere. But when I tried out the Lightapp, there was substance in the claim. Developed by Indian techies who’ve had experience working in the Bay Area, Lightapp recently came out of stealth at the Gennext Innovation Hub, an accelerator powered by Reliance Industries and Microsoft Ventures. Post launch, we got an email from Sanjeev Nair, a technologist and design guy with close to two decades of experience who had something interesting to show.

A part of the core team, Sanjeev is also one of the investors in Lightapp. And as the tag line suggests, the app is about ‘going beyond search’. Light is an answering engine built on NLP (Natural Language Processing), machine learning and man-machine hybrid technologies. What does that mean? Well, you ask Light a question and it gives you an answer as if you’re having a conversation with it. No links, no searching for answers, the ‘bot’ does it all for you. Yes, there have been efforts on similar lines (including Google), and globally corporates have dedicated teams to work on these technologies making impressive headway, but Light has something noteworthy to show.

I tried out the app and the results were pretty impressive. I tried out a variety of questions, all of which would require different kinds of processing and the responses were accurate. Right from factual information like ‘what is the temperature right now?’ to ‘how deep do roots grow?’ to ‘what is the meaning of life?’, the app had answers that were satisfactory.

Seven ways to improve your app visibility and downloads

The popularity of mobile apps continues to rise as their usage becomes increasingly prevalent across the consumer and business markets. Mobile apps were originally offered for general productivity and information retrieval, including email, calendar, contacts, stock market updates and weather information. Public demand and the availability of developer tools have driven rapid expansion in other categories.

In India, the usage of mobile apps is expected to grow based on the demand for apps in local languages. With the ability of the devices being able to render Indic fonts improving, the number of publishers offering content in vernacular language is also increasing.

With over a million apps in Apple App Store and Google Play, the challenge that publishers face is that of distribution. How does one reach out to the relevant audience? What are the available options and what are their costs? Here are lessons from seven tactics we used for our apps.

8 energizing tips from marathon runners to get your mojo back

"If you want to run, run a mile. If you want to experience a different life, run a marathon" , said three-time gold medal Olympics winner Emil Zatopek.

An entrepreneur in many ways is like a marathon runner. By choosing entrepreneurship, you have opted for a different life. You know you have a long distance to run, but it is important that you realise it is not speed but stamina and endurance that will carry you through. The most important fact to remember is you are in this alone. It is your own race.

Poo power: fuel, lampshades, paper and other useful things made from waste:

Poo. It’s a dirty word, and in some parts of the world, a taboo. But everyone does it – the average person alone produces 72.5kg of faecal matter annually. Some of it gets treated, some of it is left to float around, but nearly all of it has an economic value.

Last year, the UK’s first bus powered by human poo hit the roads of Bristol and in January this year, the Janicki Omniprocessor, a machine that turns human poo into water was revealed. Janicki Bioenergy, the company behind the machine, is soon to ship a processor to Dakar, Senegal, where it will produce 10,800 litres of water.

Here are some other examples of how waste is being integrated into sustainable, circular design and production with environmental and social benefits.
