Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame: The Greatest Gadgets of the Past 50 Years

Over the past half century, countless consumer devices have charmed, muscled, or seduced their way into our lives. Among these gadgets, a select few can be called great. IEEE Spectrum’s editors have chosen to enshrine 25 of them into the inaugural class of inductees to Spectrum’s own Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame. Some of these products launched a whole new category; others dazzled with their engineering; still others fundamentally changed the way we worked or played. Or they simply made it hard for us to remember what life was like without them. A couple of them—the smartphone, the personal computer—did all of the above.

What they have in common is that they emerged from a moment of communal genius among industrial designers, product visionaries, and electrical and electronics engineers—including some IEEE members.

Banking Is Only The Beginning: 50 Big Industries Blockchain Could Transform

Banking isn't the only industry that could be affected by blockchain tech. Law enforcement, ride hailing, and many other sectors could also have blockchain in their future.

The cornerstones of large-scale technology transformation

A clear playbook is emerging for how to integrate and capitalize on advanced technologies—across an entire company, and in any industry.

Elon Musk Unveils the Boring Company’s Car-Flinging Tunnel

FROM A PARKING lot in a sleepy, manufacturing-dominated suburb of Los Angeles, Elon Musk and his Boring Company on Tuesday night showed off what he believes is the best way to eliminate the scourge of traffic congestion: electric, autonomous vehicles bearing an extra set of wheels, shooting through thin tunnels at speeds up to 150 mph.

Supporting Reference Material for TeenTech Awards

In UK, TeenTech Awards (as part of Information Literacy) were established in 2012/3 and schools have found them a powerful tool, helping students to see how they might apply science and technology to real world problems. They encourage students to develop their own ideas for making life better, simpler, safer or more fun. Participating schools are provided with a suggested structure and industry contacts.

The supporting material provided to students deal with:  What’s the best way to do effective research for your TeenTech Award projects? Time invested wisely pays dividends and we are grateful to the Information Literacy Group at CILIP for working with us to produce a set of really helpful tips and guidelines; From how to get the best results from Google to how to protect your IP, you’ll find the ideas very useful for all projects you may be doing at school or college.

When Corporate Innovation Goes Bad — The 142 Biggest Product Failures Of All Time

From the DeLorean and New Coke to the Newton and Google Glass, here's a list of the biggest product flops from corporate giants.

Product innovation is one way that large corporations stay competitive in a rapidly changing marketplace, but it doesn’t always work out when big brands attempt innovation.

Below are what we consider to be 132 of the biggest product flops of all time. We combed through thousands of media articles to select these product flops across major industries including tech software and hardware, consumer packaged goods, fast food, and electronics.

  • A healthy economy  should be designed to thrive, not grow
  • Is the world getting better or worse? A look at the numbers
  • What are the most important moral problems of our time?

The Yoda of Silicon Valley

Donald Knuth, master of algorithms, reflects on 50 years of his opus-in-progress, “The Art of Computer Programming.”

For half a century, the Stanford computer scientist Donald Knuth, who bears a slight resemblance to Yoda — albeit standing 6-foot-4 and wearing glasses — has reigned as the spirit-guide of the algorithmic realm.

He is the author of “The Art of Computer Programming,” a continuing four-volume opus that is his life’s work. The first volume debuted in 1968, and the collected volumes (sold as a boxed set for about $250) were included by American Scientist in 2013 on its list of books that shaped the last century of science — alongside a special edition of “The Autobiography of Charles Darwin,” Tom Wolfe’s “The Right Stuff,” Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” and monographs by Albert Einstein, John von Neumann and Richard Feynman.

With more than one million copies in print, “The Art of Computer Programming” is the Bible of its field. “Like an actual bible, it is long and comprehensive; no other book is as comprehensive,” said Peter Norvig, a director of research at Google. After 652 pages, volume one closes with a blurb on the back cover from Bill Gates: “You should definitely send me a résumé if you can read the whole thing.”

Nature is a rich source of medicine – if we can protect it

The Pacific yew tree is a fairly small and slow growing conifer native to the Pacific Northwest. The Gila monster is a lizard with striking orange and black markings from the drylands of the Southwestern US and Mexico. Two very different organisms, but with a fascinating  connection. They’ve both given us drugs that have saved and improved the lives of millions of people.

Posting About Your Kids Online Could Damage Their Futures

Now that 6.8 million more people have just had their (private!) Facebook photos exposed, it seems like a good time to talk about online privacy, especially when it comes to what people post about their children.

Parents are already some of the biggest violators of their kids’ privacy, leaving potentially harmful digital footprints well before the age of consent.
